TLDR: An innovative spin on magic in isekai, full of colourfull side characters and a generous sprinkle of fan-service 😄
I'll preface this by saying that I wanted to give this story 3.5 stars, but with Honeyfeed not allowing half-stars, and after some consideration, I went with my current rating.
My favourite thing about this story is its main protagonist Kitezh. I love the archetype of 'here against her will who very reluctantly does what needs to be done because that's her job'. I appreciate that about her, because I feel like I'd act the same in her shoes; not really wanting to help those people because they're not particularly nice or welcoming, but doing it anyway because that's the right thing to do, and really because there's nothing else that Kitezh could do.
Her character evolved in subtle increments throughout the story, which was done so naturally that when the main villain pointed it out, towards the end, I had the same reaction as her, going: "huh, that's true."
This being said, Kitezh's personality also partially plays into one of my two grips with this story. (I believe) The author portrayed her as hyper-intelligent and hyper-aware of what's going on around her, but in a lot of moments it came off as her being plain lucky, or having plot armour. An example of this is the tower fight scene against Yadwiga, where the readers were not aware of the layout of the town, so we could follow the same clues as Kitezh to figure out there was a sniper, but not know where she was or how to beat her. In other words, this disconnect between Kitezh's knowledge and ability to piece things together, and the reader's knowledge and skills also created a disconnect between the story and the reader.
In a similar vein, I found a lot of the fight scenes to sprawl over many more chapters than they should. The main culprits were the abovementioned sniper chase, and the fight against the Shatter Phenomenon. If those sequences were to be compressed to fewer chapters, I think it would add a lot more tension to the events in them.
The end fight scene did not have this spread/meander issue. It was honestly so fun to read, and I loved how creatively both Kitezh and her opponent used their powers. I could just see an anime montage in my head of limbs being swapped around. That was so cool.
One of the other major things I enjoyed were the Phenomenon powers. They stood out both in the world itslef, being unique to their users, and in the isekai genre as a whole (hence the title of my review). I applaud the author for trying this new thing, and for making it a cohesive and coherent power-system! :D
Last, how could I write a review without mentioning the two cute side characters Marigold and Yadwiga? (We don't talk about Nadia, I don't like her XD (by no faut of the author's, I just don't like her personality)) They both had distinct personalities, aesthetics, and complimented Kitezh's cynical persona.
All in all, the story ended with some cool plotlines to explore in the next volume (like for example Koshei's true nature and motives), and it gave two nice slice of life chapters to conclude this arc while we wait for the sequel.
