June died twice. The first death—drowned—dragged Theo to a separate world. The second death—suicide—left Theo stranded there.

A world occupied by a city splitting Chasm where adventurers known as Gritborns—those who are born again within the depths—explore each shifting layer in hunt of magical artifacts called Fossils.

Those who descend below the second layer are rumored to never see the surface sun again. The depths are home to fiendish monsters, severe hallucinations, and uncovered secrets.
However, within the fourth layer of the depths resides a pool of liquid known as The Chasm's Mercy, said to revive any corpse that soaks in its warmth, purity of life restored. It may even be a way back home.

Theo must now step up to become a Gritborn and descend the Chasm layer by layer in hopes to find his way back to his world. He carries the twice-killed Juna in a body bag strapped to his back; his burden and last hope. And so the other Gritborns named him
