Chaotic Souls Indeed

Chaotic Souls lives up to its name, though I'll elaborate on just why in a little bit. First I'll focus on a few other things that I think YellowNinja did decently.

The world has clear depth. I can sense that the YellowNinja spent a lot of time coming up with lore and weaving it together. The details of kingdoms, politics, gods, and history are heavy-handed at times but can be intriguing. (An example of this being the state of a statue/shrine potentially affecting their surroundings and having influence on the gods). There's a sense of mythology and divinity that permeates every single inch of this story, and it does so well.

The prose is also decent enough. It's a bit jumbled enough and long-winded in sections, but I could glean information and imagine the scenes without issue.

With that being said, Chaotic Souls also has a glaring flaw: its characters.

I'll start with Gray. He is supposed to be the MC, but while I can understand his motivations (to have fun considering he was sickly in his previous world), he comes off as immature, childish, and bland. We get snippets of his thoughts and his feelings, but outside of a few passing moments I was never able to connect with him, and the way that he tackles problems/solves them do not feel satisfying. (Literally the first scene we have of him, he just knows magic out of no where and uses it to help save the day against a golem.)

Princess Aurelia comes off as somewhat intelligent but boorish. We get to see her aura farm in the Prologue and understand her a little better throughout the story. However, she never really became likable in my eyes.

The only redeeming characters in this story for me were Shoggoth, Ruddy, and to a lesser extent Fulgora. Despite being antagonists and side characters, they felt more compelling than Gray ever did. They felt flawed and somewhat believable.

To summarize, I think certain aspects of this story were good—namely the world. However, while the world may have felt alive, the souls that inhabited it were either chaotic or flat.
