After a brutal standoff in his study, private detective Seishi Takagi gets shot and, in the process, is reincarnated in the body of a child named Victor Alexander Cross. The story begins with Seishi returning to his dimly lit study, exhausted after a long day of work. He discovers that his new case, a seemingly mundane infidelity investigation, has a deeper, more dangerous connection to the Ikeda-gumi crime syndicate.
​He is soon cornered by two men, a hulking brute and a sharp-witted man, who break into his office. Seishi evades them by plunging the room into darkness and hiding in a secret tunnel beneath his desk. After they tear apart his office, a tense standoff ensues when he emerges. The encounter escalates into a gunfight, during which Seishi is fatally shot, leading to his reincarnation as Victor Alexander Cross.
