I never believed in my hometown’s matchmaking ritual. People swore a simple coin pressed to your forehead would help you find the love of your life. None of us in class bought it—until the day they dared me to wear one for a week straight. Some hoped it would work. Most started a betting pool on whether I’d find “the one” or wash out by Tuesday. So I place the lucky coin in my bandanna and tied it snug against my forehead. Then simply tried to live like a normal senior in high school.
