As part of the team that pitched you folks the main prompt, I have to say I'm impressed with where you took it.
Put plainly, when we shipped that prompt over, what I expected was something in the vein of Cube, or possibly an alien abduction story. Good fodder, but also very open. This reads like a Stephen King short (especially given the alcoholism angle), or like a cross between Silent Hill 2 and I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream when given the final twist. Not at all anticipated, but very welcome.
It could be seen, perhaps, as a little heavy-handed. The alcoholic character is fairly extreme in his portrayal, but then again that serves the purpose. And when it comes to the moral angle, traditional horror often has this strong didactic vibe, where those who suffer the horror have typically transgressed in some way, making them proper prey for the supernatural or human evils that stalk them. It's the same logic that gets us the traditional "final girl" in slasher affairs, where the one who is genuinely innocent is the one who gets to live. It's overdone, but again the final chapter kind of redeems that.
Your "plot element" draw was a little weaker on the execution, as others have pointed out, but I don't rate that terribly heavily. Overall, great job.
