Since at least St Augustine, every man who reads the Aeneid has the same thought. “I wish Dido and Aeneas could be together.” We’ve all played these fantasies in our head at some point, but only Manul actually had the stones to actually pull it off. Aeneieded is a easy to read little romp through Classical History, Actual History, and Latin Class Memes.
The story knows exactly what it is, and that is a WN Rom-Com. So it has most of the tropes and characterizations you would expect. This might bother some people if you have a particular image of these figures in your head. It is clear that the author knows the story, the world, and history, he just deliberately chooses to override it. One thing that stands out is the author’s highlighting of Carthage’s Phoenician heritage rather than the Romanization of the city.
Another highlight of the story is the author's prose, but this can be said about a lot of his writing. Its always crisp and his sense of comedic timing is excellent.
The reasons I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 are:
1) It's short, and I would have liked to have seen more happen. A story like this takes some time for us to get situated with the world, the gods, and characters. That's fine. The problem is, by the time the story was gaining its momentum it ends. As a proof of concept its excellent. As a story, it needs another arc.
2) An acknowledgement that this story might not be for everyone. The story itself requires at least some interest and familiarity with Classical Literature, but at the same time might irritate the kind of people who chafe at Agamemnon not wearing a dendra brass skirt, or expect the story to look like a Camuccini painting.
3) Minor Characters needed a little more. This is downstream of point 1, but the presence of Aeneas, Dido, & the deathless gods suck the oxygen out of the room for the other characters. Dido's Handmaiden, and Aeneas' commander never really got the chance to escape their roles as romantic supports because of this, and that's a shame.
Overall strong recommendation, I hope the story wins so I can see how it ends.
