Marjorie Theodoisa Alston-Vanderbrunt III is the granddaughter of Buffalo Brahmans. Her ancestors were founding members of The American Theosophical Society, and Grandparents interpreted the stars and secrets to Tycoons and Presidents. But in the 21st Century, no one needs that anymore, and so Marjorie lives in the peeling ruins of her gilded past. When Buffalo's Franchise Magnate Charles Krammer disappears on his conference to Vegas, everyone suspects his wife the mysterious Madame Isabelle LeFarge, mystic of the yoga moms. Its up to the newly licensed Public Adjuster and Ivy Dropout to prove this mysterious disappearance is genuinely mysterious, and therefore not subject to a payout. Can she convince her high school sweetheart and newly minted officer, Tony Russo, that she has what it takes to disprove the unprovable?
Originally this was going to be my June submission for "Atlas Anomalous." Basic premise was a detective story about an insurance companies hiring occultists to prove something was supernatural, and therefore not covered. I wrote hypnopolis instead, and turned the premise into something Columbo staring Dr Fate's Broke Granddaughter.
