Boreal Esther had once been a proud and beloved captain to his soldiers in the field. But after being betrayed and led into a trap that caused the death of all but two of his men, Boreal was disgraced. He was removed from the field, and put into Chimera Squad 44, that does whatever job the empire assigns them. Imperial mages grafted a black dragon's wing to him, letting him wield the monster's fire and flight.

The common man sees him as little better than the monsters that threaten their lives.
The military sees him as a dog meant to grovel at their feet.
The monsters he fights see him as a thief that stole the dragon's power for himself.

With the support of his squadmates, he must rise above everyone's thoughts of him, and discern the reason for the betrayal that put him here in the first place.
