Dreamy sights and romanticism typically break apart from tremendous pain. But not for this young man: indeed, so long he has spent gazing into other worlds that he cannot remember even his own name. On this account and several others, he feels himself up to his waist in sorrow—and with a heroism sitting dormant in his heart and forbidden at every turn.
But when a freak accident presents itself in the night—in his home which is not his own—his hopes for something higher are answered. He meets a mysterious woman who goes by Wendy who can somehow read his heart at a mere glance. So she knows that, like herself, he is a diviner of other worlds because of this one that has rejected him.
Fortunately, she has just the thing for them both: a backdoor to another world with strange rules that complement their visions. As neither of them are new to leaving worlds behind, they go on this path so they may unravel their hearts, tell their stories, and solve their destinies.
Hello readers! This note has some clarifying preamble:
1. SUBSTANCE: My aim was to portray a specific genera of heroism. One that perhaps is rarely spoken of in the fantasy genre.
My solution is the fantasy world's rules. The characters' navigation through them - and through their psyches - generates much of the novel's catharsis. This, however, is only possible through a slightly longer exposition. Thus, they are not transported until Chapter V.
2. WINNING: Astute readers may have noticed the title's strangeness. Winning...what? And what should "winning" mean in the world they are in? It almost comes across as an oversight - but it is not. I leave it again to the rules of the world to explain.
3. SUFFERING: "Only One Of Us Is Winning" should be read with the footsteps of doves - but the moral should be bright: "Unless we understand each other's suffering, we will never cease to talk past one another."
Thank you. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I did writing.
