Sixteen-year-old Drake Steele looks like a normal American exchange student in Kyoto. In reality, he’s a 500-year-old shinobi reincarnated across twelve lifetimes. He belongs to the Gate Agents—elite protectors whose existences are forcefully scrubbed from history every time they turn seventeen, entering a thirty-year sleep before rebirth. Drake is down to his final day, desperate to spend his remaining hours with his classmate and love, Shizuki.
But midnight is violently delayed. Kurobane Reizan, a rogue immortal who became a vampire-like Yamikoko-ra, launches a full-scale invasion across Kyoto to slaughter human leadership and harvest his oblivious siblings using a magic that kills Agents permanently.
To survive, Drake breaks protocol, arming Shizuki as they plunge into a dual-layered warzone. When Shizuki exhibits an ancient power to see the dark realm, she becomes the Regent's prime target. Drake must face an elite Belgian duelist in a moonlit shootout. The clock is ticking.
