Just a smidge.
So, this is a story about some girls who really wanted to get into uni (the first of a new era). They aren't superheroes or anything, just normal girls. They had to outsmart everyone else; it's not going to be easy, a lot of them won't make it. But some will! Also the challenge to the reader is to understand before they say what tricks they will use. I will provide clues, I will be fair. A sort of traditional English mystery.
And then they'll have four years of uni drama to deal with. But this part is just about getting in and the first few months.
I like the contrast in language. The English girl swearing, even though she's from a good family, is a nice touch. And the English misunderstanding Japanese culture, seeing the girls as 'slut' because of their manga-inspired style, is funny. But the Japanese girls are actually pretty complex. They're stuck in a society that romanticizes the past, especially old manga, but they don't really get it. They interpret the pictures, but they don't understand Japanese anymore (all the world speak a sort of simple English). And they're expected to be perfect, traditional women, but they have to conform to a very specific public image - so seifuku and kimono/yukata everywhere, because they think that's how girls dressed in the golden age.
Wednesday, I'm dropping two more chapters. These ones were just to set the scene, but the real fun starts next week with these two Japanese twins. Can't wait!
