I didn't mean it like that—No rant felt whatsoever.
Making a character miserable and an engaging story is truly hard, I don't know much about light novels really, as everything I've done (in a serious way) are pure "occidental" novels. What I usually plan are characters that are engaging by being likable, competent, and/or proactive. This is NOT something I've discovered.
With that you'll have good plot progression and won't lose as many readers. That's why I say it's original, and while it also is a big challenge. That being said, I think you are following the right steps, as a relatable character is most of the time likable, and while it's true that he is miserable, a character progressing towards that three "stats" performs well. If the reader can see the progress, the reader will stay.
