Niles is named after Frasier Crane's brother from the sitcom Frasier and actually shares some of his personality traits, notably his inferiority complex. The cappuccino with cinnamon he is drinking in his introductory scene is a direct reference to Niles from Frasier's usual order at "Cafe Nervosa."
Shozo Kimura is named after Shozo Endo, half of the Japanese comedy duo Cocorico, although his personality is completely different. I just thought it was a nice sounding name.

Kimura was originally meant to be a minor character when I was planning this novel out, but I ended up really liking the relationship between him and Fabi, so I gave him a much more fleshed out backstory. I chose Ibaraki prefecture for his hometown because it has a reputation for being a rural area with not much going on (or so I've been told, at least).
