Chapter 53:

I woke up and he read my BL

Crimson Power Black Feather

Maki opened his eyes. It was very bright in the bedroom, the sun shining through the windows. He blinked, realizing he had overslept. He rapidly turned to the other side. Kōga lay there, wide awake, soma yaoi manga in hand, the hand behind his head. Maki glanced at the cover and jumped up, his eyes wide, he tried snatching it out of Kōga's hand but failed.

"Hey, what are you trying to do?" Kōga was faster, "I am trying to understand your preferences, and clearly, you are such a roman-..."

"Stop!"

For a moment they fought on the bed for it. At this point Kōga had read half of it, so Maki felt really embarrassed.

"Birdy, stop this, you lost when you didn't wake up on time, it's like 11 o'clock already, I thought you would wake up at 5 or something."

Maki was still struggling to take the manga, "You looked through my stuff?"

"I was bored, I woke up several hours ago, and I couldn't bear to wake the princess up, so I walked around the room, this one was not hidden at all. So I decided to read something, oh, if only I knew what would await me..."

"Stop this!" Maki finally got a hold of it, "It's... well..."

"No need to apologize, honey, I know how it is when you are lonely."

"I am not," he skillfully threw the manga on the table.

"Sure. So, you are woken up now. What do you want to do? Look for the yokai? I can tell you certainly there are only us and Yoshio in this temple right now."

"You sure?" Maki tried to calm his messy hair, sitting straight up. "Hm, I wonder what it was then..."

"Listen, I wanted to tell you something about the model I am dating."

"Dating?" Maki froze, enthralled by the romantic magic he'd forgotten all about it.

"Well, you know - unofficially, fake dating for the info. I've been holding hands nonstop these past few days, and I still haven't gotten any visions of him. I am unsure, but there might be something going on. Maybe he figured out something about me. Remember that time I looked into my mother's memory, and the killer guy looked me in the eye, I thought it was because he looked in my mother's eyes, but now I feel like it might be me he looked at. He is very powerful, it's certain. And if the model works for him, they know now. I am unaware how one can stop me from seeing things, but you told me they have a bunch of magical weapons, maybe they have other shit too." He blabbered, unconscious of the Maki's expression. "What do you think?" Kōga finally looked up.

Maki's eyes were angry, fists clenched under the blanket. "You kissed him too?"

"Oh, well... I mean I had to know..."

"Mn..."

"Listen, Maki..." Kōga's voice became gentle, "I had to do it, we need to know more. I don't like him, no need to be so angry about it."

When Maki heard his name his ears turned red. He didn't know how he should react: technically there was no reason for him to be like an Otello. He breathed out quietly, and said, "I am not angry, why do you think I am angry, that's not true."

Kōga tilted his head, smiling. "You totally are, you should see yourself now, you are as red as a strawberry. I like that you are so jealous. It means I am not just random powerful yokai you are using for your benefit."

"I don't need your powers, what are you talking about?"

"Listen, if you want me, I am here. I grew to like you, you see." Kōga paused, looking at the ceiling, "but I think I will have to try a making out session with the guy, I want to try seeing the past."

"No! There is no way." Maki didn't realize he almost yelled. "What if he wants more?"

"I am okay with that, but for your sake, I won't cross any lines, I promise..." Kōga avoided looking at him, unsure whether his promise was fully true. "I want to know about this evil genius too, you know. He has been alive for too long making too many people suffer it seems. I am unsure what he has on the Underworld, why don't they care at all?"

"I haven't been there for some time, but the last time I saw the situation it didn't seem to me they care much about the living."

"Obviously, pathetic, all of them. Mother used to live there at some point, she told me it's all corrupt. Well, I haven't been there for a moment either. In my opinion, there is not much interesting going on besides the nightlife. After several decades it gets repetitive."

"Decades?" Maki looked at him, unconvinced, "You really spend so much time there?"

"Not much different from some parts of Tokyo. Well, sometimes you get fed up with hanging out with mortals too, you know..." His tone was suggestive, Maki had no willingness to get into that.

"So when did you go there then?"

"Well, I have spent some time there over the last century, with..." Kōga coughed, "...some other people. It wasn't too nice living in Japan at the time anyway. And in my village, it was boring as hell. We were secluded, so you can imagine how it was."

"I understand, I was born in such a place."

"Oh, for real? Nice, I guess you were in a tengu village? So what happened?"

"Well... It got massacred by foxes."

"Oops, that's awkward. I hope you are not planning to get revenge by killing all the foxes? I don't want to die!"

"No." Maki ignored the joke, "It was orchestrated by several more powerful yokai, including the killer."

"Oh shit. I am sorry, I shouldn't have joked, actually. "

"It doesn't bother me."

"Okay. Well, I..." Kōga thought about something for a moment, and then looked back at Maki with bright eyes, "I never told you, but sometime in the 90s I became a fashion designer. It was cool and fun, but again, after 20 years it got boring, so I had to imitate dying, in order to get out of there. Yet, here I am working in the industry again." He laughed, "I mean it's just for fun, men and money."

Maki glanced at him, subsiding the anger. Kōga didn't notice.

"So, I am pretty rich, pretty happy, and mostly free to do what I want." He dropped his head on the pillow. "I was happy to let go of the family, honestly. I was so done with all the homophobia. It's easy to live free, and alone. There is no need to care about any other person, or about losing them..." He stretched his hands up, studying them, pausing. "Em, this is probably unnecessary information..."

Maki took his hand and turned to look into Kōga's eyes, "Listen, I think there is nothing stupid about sharing your feelings. I think you are amazing, and even if you don't want to talk about something, I won't pressure you."

Kōga froze for a moment, his eyebrow raised. He took his hand away rapidly, saying, "Ha-ha sure, you sound like a psychotherapist. Anyway. I think we should eat now, no?"

"We can, but I wanted to return to something..."

"What? My long distraction about the past didn't distract you?" Kōga propped his head up on his arm, smirking nervously.

"It didn't. I don't want you to try looking into the past, there is no use."

"What if he'd seen his face though?" Kōga was serious.

"Unlikely, he always wears a mask to be secure."

Kōga thought about the options, in the end, he sighed and sat up saying quietly, "I want to help you..."

"I don't need your help. I can do it myself." Maki's eyes were full of warmth, but his voice was strict. "There is nothing useful in knowing the past anyway, it took you a lot of time last time you did it, and your mom was't moving."

"I want to try anyway." Kōga looked at him, certain.

Maki had to give up. He felt betrayed, frowning to himself. He didn't understand. There was no use.

Suddenly he felt an embrace. Kōga's big bright eyes, full of innocence stared at him. He couldn't stand it and brushed Kōga's hair away, to break his gaze off.

Kōga smiled, his ears twitching in satisfaction. "If it works, I promise to show you my tails, okay?"

"I guess."

"Oh, don't be so serious! I love it when you are like this, but you don't need to play it cool with me anymore, I stopped doing that too, just as you wished."

"I guess..." Maki touched Kōga's lightly tinted red cheek. He was not mad anymore, however, he felt sad. He couldn't help but imagine Kōga with that model yokai. "Khm," he moved away a bit, "I need to show you the blade we got, I feel like you might know something about it."

"Sure," Kōga stood up from the bad, the mood had changed to serious again.

"It's downstairs. First, let's go to the bathroom, I will show you, and in the meantime, I will talk to Yoshio about all of this."

"Sounds good to me."
