Book 1: Bulwark

It was a peaceful summer evening in Britain. The thick wind pushed through the trees as it would on any other humid night. In the town of Warwick, Mary Easton and her husband, Sturgeon Easton welcomed their first child into the world.

Angus arrived later in Mary’s life than expected. Sturgeon had already retired from his work as a military officer, and lived in his reward for his service: a small but serviceable plot of land. While Sturgeon was technically a Baron, he rarely acted like it. He helped his wife run her spice shop through physical labor alongside his servants.

Although he was proud to have a son, he also worried for little Angus. A few months ago, a large crack formed in the sky and many members of the royal family became mysteriously ill. When it first appeared in the spring of 1326, people were quite worried. Now, they almost didn’t notice it in their busy daily lives. Almost. Every few weeks, a horrible crashing noise emerged from the crack and it grew in size just enough to notice.

Many of the religious population believed that it was a sign of impending punishment for degenerate acts taking place throughout the royal family, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth would come later, and it would bring society to its knees.
