Chapter 8:

#8: Escape at the Edge

Fragments of Eternity

The night breeze carried a peculiar smell of electricity, something Dante couldn't ignore as he ran through the illuminated streets of the city center. Every corner seemed like a trap, the lights of the holograms projecting messages of progress and a harmonious future, a visual spectacle that covered the cracks in a rotten system. He knew the drones were close by, and the footsteps echoing in the distance confirmed that they were being pursued.

“Run, Dante!” Lara shouted, pulling him into a narrow alley. Her feet hammered the ground urgently, the hood hiding part of her face as she advanced without hesitation.

Dante could barely keep up with her, his chest burning with effort. His heartbeat echoed in his ears, the sound of the accelerated footsteps of his pursuers getting closer and closer.

“Where are we going to hide?” he asked, struggling to breathe. The air seemed increasingly heavy, mixed with the growing tension.

Lara quickly turned her head, without slowing down.

“We’re not going to hide,” she said, already fiddling with the device on her wrist as they continued running. “We’re going to lose these guys.”

They continued down a few more alleys, but Dante began to notice that they were approaching a dead end. His heart raced again, this time with fear.

“Lara!” he exclaimed, his voice choked with exhaustion. But she seemed oblivious to the panic that was taking hold of him.

Finally, they reached a concrete wall that blocked any path forward. Lara, wasting no time, ran to a hidden panel on one of the sides and began typing in a code. With a soft click, a metal door opened, revealing a staircase that descended to the basement.

“Hurry up!” she pushed Dante inside, before stepping in behind him and closing the door with a firm click. The muffled sound of the drones above was now just a distant echo.

They walked down the stairs in silence, the dim emergency lights revealing the cramped and gloomy environment. The smell of rust mixed with the mold of the basement invaded Dante's nostrils, who leaned against the wall trying to catch his breath.

“Are we safe here?” he asked, still panting.

Lara took off her hood and looked around, observing the damp walls and the exposed cables on the ceiling. Her hard expression seemed to soften slightly with relief.

“For now, yes. This is one of my hiding places. No one will find us here,” she replied, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the sleeve of her jacket.

Dante let out a nervous laugh, still trying to process everything that was happening.

“I thought we were screwed. These guys were on top of us.”

Lara took a deep breath, and her expression became serious again.

“They weren't joking. They know we're too close to the truth.” Dante stared at the ground for a moment, digesting the weight of those words. He knew their mission was dangerous, but now it seemed like they were one step away from collapse.

“What truth, Lara? What are we really facing here?” he asked, his voice a little lower, as if he were afraid of the answer.

Lara hesitated for a second before answering, but her eyes were darker than ever.

“I was able to access more information about Project Aurora,” she began, her tone more serious than he had ever heard before. “It’s not just about immortality or power. It’s about total control. They’re messing with people’s DNA, reprogramming whoever uses the new medical treatments.”

Dante’s eyes widened, feeling a chill down his spine.

“What do you mean, reprogramming? Like… turning people into something else?”

“Exactly,” Lara replied, crossing her arms. “They’re messing with people’s essence, changing who they are inside.” The elite are creating a society where only they have control. And they're starting with the poorest classes, those who have no other option but to use these services. That's how they'll make sure no one rebels. Everyone will be… programmed.

Dante was silent for a moment, feeling the impact of those words. It wasn't just a matter of inequality or injustice. It was a future where humanity was being shaped, controlled.

“This changes everything,” he murmured, running a hand through his hair. “How do we stop something like this?”

Lara sighed.

“We need more time to understand the full scope of this. But… we can't do it alone. We need allies who understand what's at stake.”

Dante looked at her, his face tense.

“And who the hell can we trust? Everyone seems to be involved in this shit.”

Lara opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, a distant sound alerted them. The echo of footsteps in the basement corridor made them immediately stand up.

“Damn it…” Lara muttered. She activated the device on her wrist, adjusting the signal so they wouldn’t be tracked, but the footsteps were getting closer.
