Chapter 9:

#9: Silent Conspiracy

Fragments of Eternity

The bright streets of downtown Rio seemed to be surrounding Dante and Lara as they walked away from their hiding place. The technology that was supposed to make their lives easier was the same technology that was relentlessly hunting them. The glow of the holographic billboards reflected on their faces, but there was no time to admire the messages of a “harmonious” future. Lara knew this narrative very well and knew that behind this sold utopia, control was absolute. There was no longer anywhere to hide; the circle was closing in.

“We need a plan,” Dante said, his voice tense as he looked nervously around, the streets seeming increasingly under surveillance. “They're on top of us. We can't keep running around without knowing where we're going.”

Lara nodded in agreement. She felt the pressure in every decision she made, but her quick mind didn't give her room to waver.

— Malik is trying to find out who leaked our location — she began, still holding the communication device in her hand. — Until then, we need to find allies off the radar.

— You sound like they’re out there, waiting for us to call — Dante replied, sarcasm slipping out as he tried to hide his fear. — Who’s going to help us? Who hasn’t been corrupted yet or is too scared to act?

Lara stopped walking, staring at Dante for a moment. He was right. Society was fragmented; trust was almost extinct. The people who knew too much were dead or silenced in some way. And those who tried to resist were isolated, painted as crazy.

— There’s a group — she said, her tone becoming more serious. — They’re outside the system, but they have information. They can hack networks, infiltrate data and access places that even the elite can’t imagine. The problem is that they don’t trust anyone outside.

— Great. And how do we gain their trust? — Dante crossed his arms, skeptical.

Lara smiled at the corner of her mouth, the daring gleam returning to her eyes.

—I used to be part of that group. They owe me a few favors. The question is… will they be willing to risk themselves for this cause?

Dante stared at her for a second, processing the revelation.

—You never cease to amaze me, do you? — He laughed, but the sound was full of tension. — Let's go then. We have nothing to lose.

They followed less busy streets, where the surveillance was weaker. Every alley they passed through, every corner they turned, seemed to be part of a chaotic maze. Dante felt like the city was watching him, even in the shadows, as if the very technology that made it so advanced was a conscious entity, always watching.

After walking for almost an hour, they arrived at an abandoned warehouse. The place was dirty, surrounded by graffiti and debris. But Lara knew that the real entrance was not visible to anyone. She crouched down in front of a rusty metal door and slid a device over the surface. A holographic panel appeared, blinking a few times before displaying an “Access Granted” message.

The door creaked open, revealing a long, dark hallway.

“So, is this the group?” Dante asked, looking around suspiciously.

“Welcome to the Underworld,” Lara replied, her tone almost ironic. She entered first, expecting him to follow her.

Inside the warehouse, the environment was completely different. Cutting-edge technology mixed with the chaos of old parts, exposed wires, and monitors transmitting data at high speed. Hackers sat at makeshift stations monitoring the digital traffic of the entire city, their screens flashing with codes and images captured from security cameras.

“Who are they?” Dante asked, astonished by what he saw.

“The real mastermind behind the breaches in the system. They track data that the elite don't even know exists, they uncover secrets that make Project Aurora look like child's play — Lara explained as she walked through the space, her eyes scanning the room for someone specific.

A tall woman with braided hair and piercing eyes approached Lara with a restrained smile.

— I thought you'd never show up here again — she said, her deep voice echoing through the room.

— Shira, we need help — Lara was direct, without beating around the bush.

Shira crossed her arms and looked at Dante, assessing him for a moment.

— And who's the newbie?

— An ally — Lara answered, without hesitation. — We're being hunted. And there are people inside the system betraying us. Do you think you can find out who it is?

Shira narrowed her eyes, clearly weighing the risks. The silence between them was thick, loaded with a history that Dante didn't understand.

“I’ll see what I can do,” Shira finally replied. “But there’s a price to pay.”

“I know,” Lara said firmly. “And I’m willing to pay it.”

Shira nodded and began walking to one of the monitoring stations, giving quick orders to the other hackers. Meanwhile, Lara and Dante moved away a little, looking for an area where they could talk without being overheard.

“Do you trust her?” Dante asked, still uncertain about everything that was happening.

“She’s saved me before. But in our world, trust is relative,” Lara replied, without taking her eyes off Shira. “The question is: how far is she willing to go? And what will she want in return?”

Dante shook his head, feeling increasingly uncomfortable. He wasn’t used to this game of shadows and secrets, where every move seemed calculated, and every word had weight.

Time passed slowly as they waited. Lara fidgeted, fiddling with her smartwatch, monitoring the drones flying over the city. They knew they were one step away from being located again. Every second counted.

Finally, Shira returned, her expression full of tension.

— You have someone on the inside, yes. His name is Zane. He's selling information to the government and to the heads of Project Aurora. If you don't act fast, everything you know will fall into their hands.

Lara clenched her fists, feeling anger bubbling inside. Zane was one of the few she felt she could trust. Now, everything made sense.

— Where is he now? — Lara asked, already thinking about her next move.

Shira looked at the monitors before answering.

— Near the Solaris Tower. You have little time.

Lara turned to Dante, her expression determined.

— We'll catch him. If you hurry, there's time.

Dante nodded, his heart racing. They were about to face an enemy from within. And they knew that if they failed, there would be no turning back.

— Then let's go — Dante said, his eyes steady.

And with that, the two disappeared into the night, ready for the next battle.
