Chapter 17:

Battle Scars

Ring Fall Y2K

“Louis! Are you all right?” William found himself yelling.

“I’ll be fine Mon Frere! Just get some off me” Louis said confidently.

He shot twelve more missiles from his Mech’s wings at the four holes left spawning monsters to the battlefield. The missiles exploded, shaking the ground of the open courtyard and rattling all the glass shards on the ground from the previously exploded windows.

William took a deep breath and started exhaling slowly.

He noted that following the explosion no further Fallen joined the battle and that the holes to the catacombs had been sealed.

As the air escaped Wards lips, bullets rained down on anything with teeth around his friend.

The captain almost reflexively switched magazines the moment the armor piercing rounds started to fail. He could see the toothy bastards yellow crystals glow as they started to adapt

Their heads started to forcefully crunch into their own torso while the torso itself grew significantly. Before Ward could figure out where the head was now so he could shoot the brain, all the Devourers skin ripped apart. The Devourers wounds pulsed as yellow crystals burst out transforming random parts all over their body into multiple mouths.

Ward was horrified but his hands already reloaded his gun with size changing bullets.

The moment he fired one of the glowing green bullets his hands were already refilling his explosive rounds. The bullet grew in size, colliding with the torso of several headless Devourers eradicating anything in its path.

‘I need to save those up’ Ward thought ‘but I have one more magazine’

In the time Ward kept the Devourers busy Nomad started to run towards Oath, reaching the wall beneath the crouching sniper.

“Are you planning on coming up?” William asked the swordsmen.

“No. I just don’t want to be flanked with one limping leg and an exposed cockpit” Lois replied drawing a revolver and holding the sword with one hand.

“How many missiles you got?” Ward asked as he alternated between huge bullets and exploding ones.

“two more. “ Louis said as he shot and slashed at enemies coming at him. “How many yellow bastards left?” Louis said as one of the devourers grabbed the blade of his sword only to be electrocuted by Louis’s frame then shot point blank.

“fifty” William said, reloading the exploding rounds.

“And how many red ones” Louis asked as he ran up the wall only to jump off it.

From the air he extended his blade and spun around like a madman. Sending a whirlwind of electricity and cuts at every last one of the Devourers left.

Ward transitioned to his automatic grenade pistols and With the Devourers’ flesh exposed, he shot a grenade onto each open wound. “About a hundred, but … I think they are growing.”

On the other side of the battlefield, a few seconds prior, Anya was ripping and tearing her foes while smashing them with bits of terrain.

The blood of her enemies pooled into a small river at her feet, making the ground slippery.

Nonetheless Undying kept overpowering all of the Relentless like an adult fighting children.

Random statues outside the Louvre were picked up and hurled, pieces of the rail station to New Paris were chucked at enemies and Undying’s hammer zoomed around the battlefield like a drunk meteorite.

“Watch out” Kaya said as she slithered Waterfall behind Undying, catching it before it slipped backwards on the puddles of blood.

Anya used the slip and grab to dodge a jumping Relentless only to slam her hammer behind her at the ground and stand up to swing again.

Anya then got close to the statue of Louis the Fourteenth and placed two hands on the stone base of the statue. While Kaya did her best to Keep the Fallen away with her sharp scales and teeth for a moment, Anya lifted the whole statue over her head.

Anya and Kaya switched positions quickly as Kaya retreated and Anya smashed the statue at the group of Relentless. She hit them so hard they bounced off the floor, only to have the statue thrown at them before they hit the ground again.

The relentless who managed to survive Anya’s onslaught were slowly reforming with hysterical laughter, they seemed to enjoy the pain they received. They had so much fun they looked like they just wanted to return a favor.

But they couldn’t breach Undying’s thick armor and were growing frustrated with their failure.

By the time they charged at Undying again, they seemed to be bigger. Growing more and more crystals with each second as they got almost as tall as five meters in one burst.

They all seemed to be in a manic state with wide eyes and bleeding smiles.

With their increased size they started to push Undying back with team effort.

Two Relentless jumped on each of undying legs while a group of four grabbed on to every arm.

Kaya did her best to free Undying, coiling around one group and grating their heads with her sharp scales to a mush.

Anya then used the now free hand to crush the four grabbing her other arm on the same side but not before the group on the other side ripped out one of Undying’s arms as more and more of them held its legs.

Before the last group could rip out the second arm on Undying’s left they received an exploding bullet right to the center of mass, sending them flying.

“Got your back!” Ward Said shifting his Mech’s weight as a huge pile of bullet casings fell from the roof to the floor.

With the Devourers dead Nomad started to dash towards Undying with Oath giving cover fire.

Even though his leg did not work properly Nomad reached the Relentless faster than William thought he could, electrifying his blade and aiming for the spine of any relentless in range.

The remaining relentless seemed confused as the three Mechs fought them in complete synchronization with each other and the music playing from Undying.

When they tried to stop the hammer they got bit, and when they tried to deal with the teeth they got slashed with electricity. They were flanked on all sides.

The few red monsters who managed to get out of the mechanical circle of attacks received a bullet to their head from the other side of the courtyard.

And as the song ended so did the fight.

Anya’s cascade now over and all the soldiers were breathing heavy
