Chapter 28:
To the day when I will finally look forward to Tomorrow
There is no way this just happened.
She was just a young girl going on a walk. Who would have thought she would witness the apocalypse in the middle of the forest?
...
She wasn't sure exactly where she was. She was not good at navigating a forest. In other words, she had gotten completely lost.
Yet, the fact she was lost led to an unexpected development. She was not killed in the explosions.
Maybe that place was planned to be the end of The Hub from the start since there were not a lot of people suddenly combusting over there, and, even if she was blown away, the explosions were not enough to reach and kill her.
She ran to the place where the explosions started, but she only saw the results of the disaster.
All the buildings were destroyed, cars turned upside down, and even a small fire remained here and there.
She looked for her family, she dug in the ruins, but nothing. There were not a lot of bodies around in the first place. The few she saw were also burned beyond recognition.
She quickly fell into despair. She cried for hours, and every minute spent crying just added to the pain.
"How lame would it be to die from crying too much?"
...
Hunger, that is what was moving her. Hunger and thirst were what kept her alive for the next couple of years. She learned how to hunt and gather. She built a shelter, and she started living every day just to see tomorrow.
"What am I even doing this for?"
After so much time, she realized how pointless it all was. She kept going, but there seemed to be no end. She was fighting a battle where victory just meant you could go on to the next fight.
But she kept going.
...
A little over six years after the event. She was trying to keep warm in her hut.
She had gotten used to the "nuclear" winters. Or so she thought, but this one was especially difficult.
Everything around her was dead. She was without food, and she had no way of going too far due to the cold.
"You were this exact age that day, right? Who would have thought... Even in death I keep following your footsteps."
She got up and started walking. She had no destination. She was just tired of all this.
Let's see how far I can get.
It took about half an hour. After those 30 minutes, she fell into a hole she herself had dug before as a trap.
She didn't remember when she dug that. She didn't even know where she was with all that snow around. There was only one thing on her mind.
It is finally over...
She closed her eyes, never to open them again.
...
...
...
The next thing she could remember was her eyes opening to a completely different environment.
The place was the exact same, but it was full-on summer.
She got up. She didn't understand what was going on. She was too tired to ask. She just went back to what she had gotten used to.
...
A year had passed by again. Only this time, the harsh winter was no more.
I was on a day that should be close to her birthday. She decided she needed a change of pace, so she went on a journey to see the world, or at least what was left of it.
That is when she heard another explosion and people screaming.
She crouched down. She was terrified.
Not again, not again, not again.
That was when she looked at the sky. A marble-like block was floating in the air. Somebody saw her and immediately jumped off.
?: "What the hell are you even doing in a warzone?"
He had a kind smile despite his harsh words.
It took her a second to understand what was going on, but when she finally did, she cried tears that should have dried up long ago.
"What are you even doing after so much time? How could you leave me all alone for so long? What kind of brother are you?'
She hugged her brother, this was her first human interaction in who even knows how long.
