Chapter 29:

Ch. 15 Unexpected expected reunion

To the day when I will finally look forward to Tomorrow

The war had been going on for the past five years.

If you were to ask me how come we lasted this long, I wouldn't be able to answer. I planned a surprise attack that would take us through the unprepared peaceful city in an instant and have me step on that parasite by week two.

When that failed, I was convinced we were all going to die. I had underestimated my colleagues badly.

Ossas, despite how he acted at first, became a competent leader quickly.

When I first told him to prepare the grounds for the war, the look he gave me made me think he would fail miserably if he even intended to try doing something this scary.

I was really surprised when I had multiple resistance groups contact me and report how well the preparations were going.

I can only imagine they had been preparing this for a long time.

We all started as separate forces attacking the area of the wall closest to us. We thought that blocking off segments of the wall would prevent their reinforcements from getting to the main attack force in Tokyo.

We implemented modified marble within the walls to keep them under control. The most important cities also had allies who, like Mori, had some degree of authority over the city.

Attacking a living city seemed like a crazy idea, we spent months trying to find a way to do it, but the solution we settled for could only be used temporarily. We had to keep everyone who could control those walls captive far outside the city.

In hindsight, capturing them alive was also a mistake.

The plan worked for a while as a few people from The Hub also started joining the resistance once they found out about it.

The only problem was the main attack force failed to kill off the alien.

That was the mistake that brought about the worst outcome.

...

*The day of the first attack*

Suit guy: "You came all the way here, tied us up, and now you are trying to kill God. All for what? What gives you the right to destroy everything we have built? Who do you people think you are? Especially you. You were so close to receiving It's blessing, and you just ran away with that girl. You don't stand a chance against it, and yet look what you are trying to do. You cursed fool. And that failed experiment. That waste of resources. That piece of..."

Silence. The only sound that could be heard was that of a head rolling.

"That felt disturbingly good."

I was lucky. Mori came back just after I did that. I wouldn't want anyone I care about to see me like that.

"Found anything?"

Mori: "We have to get out of here. NOW!"

"Huh?"

The next thing I saw was another headless person running towards me.

I dodged quickly, and Mori opened a hole under it.

What the hell is going on?

That is when I finally looked around. My people were being attacked by our own headless soldiers. Every now and then, one of the still alive ones would simply lose their head and become another zombie.

I caught only a glimpse of it.

"There it is."

I tried to shoot at the thing, but I was not able to hit it.

All our forces gathered here, but we were only giving it more people to kill.

This can't be where we get stuck...

There was nothing we could do. My soldiers were getting turned one by one.

We failed.

"RETREAT! RETREAT RIGHT NOW!"

Everyone started getting out of The Hub. Everyone except me. I just couldn't let it end like that. I saw the thing standing there, taunting me.

Thing: "You brought back a lot of my test subjects. Thank you."

That was all it took for me to snap.

I ran towards it. I was determined to kill it.

That was when a wall appeared in front of me, and I was transported outside of The Hub.

Mori: "I will not lose you now that you are finally mine."

I was mad at her. But she was right. The plan had failed. This war was going to become a lot longer.

...

Five years later, I was getting back from an attack when I saw her. She was just standing there, looking at the sky with her palms covering her ears.

Of course she appears when I least expect it.

I jumped from about 20 meters in the sky to land in front of her. Did I develop some superpowers to be able to do that? Of course not. I just put my trust in Mori and in the marble in my shoes.

I was going to get scolded for that, but you have to look cool in front of your younger sibling.

That's also the reason why I just kept smiling. Not a single tear got out.

I had finally fulfilled my promise. After so many years, in the most unexpected spot, I had finally found her.

I always knew I would. I promised I would. It was bound to happen. I was just surprised it happened right then and there.

Now that I think about it, what the hell is she doing crouching down like that in a war zone?

After asking her that, she just screamed at me and hugged me. Never in my life had I seen her act like that, so I was too surprised to react.

I just smiled, let out a sigh of relief, and took her to the nearest base.

I've fulfilled my promise, now what?
