Chapter 37:
Fragments of Eternity
The air in the hideout seemed electrified. Lara, Dante, Shira, Caio and Alma planned their next steps, aware that each decision brought them closer to the final confrontation with Project Aurora.
“We need a clear target,” Lara began, pointing to the holographic maps projected by Shira. “If we destroy the control centers, we cut off the head of the snake.”
“It’s not that simple,” Shira replied, enlarging the hologram. “The labs are interconnected. Destroying one could alert the others.”
Dante, still recovering, crossed his arms.
“What if we manage to access the main command center?”
Shira raised an eyebrow.
“Are you suggesting invading the Copacabana Control Center? It’s practically a bunker.”
“It’s the heart of it all,” Alma added. — If we take that, we'll have the chance to dismantle everything at once.
Necessary Alliances
Alma contacted allies from other sectors. Smaller resistance groups, operating under the radar, answered the call. With the plan defined, Lara and Dante decided to lead a small team to infiltrate the location, while Shira and Caio took care of the rearguard, ensuring that the communication systems were not compromised.
The night before the operation, Caio found Alma outside the hideout, observing the horizon illuminated by the futuristic buildings of the city.
— Thinking about what could go wrong? — he asked.
— Always. — Alma replied, with a discreet smile. — But also about what could go right.
— And what is that?
— Freedom.
The two exchanged a look full of understanding, a bond forming amidst the tension of the moment.
The Invasion
The following morning, the group set off in silence, using underground tunnels to approach the command center. Lara led the way, her eyes fixed on the entrance protected by armed guards and surveillance drones.
“Are you sure they didn’t see us?” Dante whispered as he adjusted his makeshift weapon.
“Don’t mistake luck for skill,” Shira replied over the comm, monitoring the security cameras remotely.
When the group finally reached the inner perimeter, an alarm went off.
“Damn it!” Lara growled, as the high-pitched sound echoed through the metal corridors.
The guards came running, but the group was prepared. Alma stood out, surprising even Lara and Dante with her combat skills. While she took down two guards with quick movements, Caio used electromagnetic pulse devices to neutralize the drones.
“We have to go fast!” Shira shouted over the comm. — I'm holding off the defense systems, but they're trying to regain control!
Lara, her heart pounding, advanced with Dante toward the central control room.
Confrontation with the Executioner
As they entered the room, they were greeted by a familiar figure: the Executioner. He was standing in front of the control panel, a cold smile on his lips.
— I knew you would come. — he said, his voice echoing.
Lara raised her weapon, but the Executioner was faster. With one swift movement, he disarmed Dante and launched himself at her.
The fight was fierce. Lara used all her agility to dodge the blows, while Dante, even injured, tried to take down the Executioner. The man was relentless, but their determination was greater.
At the height of tension, when it seemed that the Executioner would emerge victorious, Shira managed to activate an overload in the systems, temporarily deactivating the Executioner's defenses.
“Now!” Lara shouted, delivering a final blow that knocked him down.
The End Is Nigh
With the Executioner neutralized, the group accessed the central panel. The information contained there revealed the full extent of Project Aurora: genetic manipulation, large-scale experiments, and the true goal of the program — controlling humanity through selective immortality.
“It's not just about living forever,” Dante murmured as he read the data. “It's about who controls, who lives and who dies.”
Lara clenched her fists.
“Let's end this.”
Shira, on the other end of the communicator, began processing the data for global release.
“Get ready. After this, there will be no turning back.”
