Chapter 38:
Fragments of Eternity
As the group fled the command center, explosions began to rock the building. Project Aurora forces retaliated with everything they had.
Alma led the retreat, ensuring that no one was left behind. Caio, despite his lack of combat experience, showed courage when facing guards blocking the exit.
“Go ahead, I’ll hold them off!” he shouted, pushing Alma to continue.
Lara and Dante, covered in dust and blood, reached the final rendezvous point, where vehicles prepared by the allies were waiting for them.
“Did we do it?” Lara asked, panting.
Shira appeared on the screen of one of the devices.
“We managed to send everything. The whole world will know the truth.”
But victory came at a cost. As the group celebrated briefly, a new transmission appeared on the monitors. The face of the leader of Project Aurora, a man with a cold and authoritative look, appeared.
“You think you won,” he said, with a threatening tone. — This is just the beginning.
The silence that followed the Aurora Project leader's transmission was deafening. His words echoed in everyone's minds.
— This is not the end… — Lara murmured, feeling a chill run down her spine.
— He's playing with us. — Dante said, clenching his fists. — He wants to make us believe that we're back to square one.
Alma watched the screen with her eyes half closed, as if she could see beyond the message.
— No. — she finally said. — He's not bluffing.
Everyone looked at her.
— What do you mean by that? — Caio asked, still trying to catch his breath.
— He has something bigger in mind. — Alma replied, her expression grave. — And if we're right about genetic control, then he still has the resources to continue, even without the main command center.
Lara felt the weight of responsibility fall on her once again.
— We need to end it all once and for all. We can't leave any loopholes.
A New Plan
Shira appeared on the screen, sweaty and with dark circles under her eyes, but with determination in her eyes.
— I have an idea, but you won't like it.
— We're listening. — Dante said.
— The data we released was partially intercepted. The message reached the public, but there are parts that only the main system still contains. If we access the original matrix in the Aurora Project's core, we can ensure that none of this continues.
— The matrix? — Caio asked, frowning. — I thought we were already done with this.
— Not completely. — Shira explained. — The core is in an underground facility, extremely protected. It's their last bastion.
Lara stood up, her face determined.
— So that's where we're going.
The Last Refuge
The location of the complex was revealed: an underground complex hidden beneath Guanabara Bay, accessible only by an underwater tunnel. The group knew this would be their most dangerous mission yet.
As they planned the attack, tensions rose. Lara and Dante tried to stay focused, but the proximity and stress made each exchange more charged.
“Do you think you can do this alone?” Dante asked, after Lara insisted on leading the infiltration.
“I’m not alone,” she countered, crossing her arms. “I have all of you.”
“What if something goes wrong?” he pressed, his tone softer this time.
She sighed, her eyes fixed on his.
“Let’s not think about that now. We just need to win.”
The Romance in the Midst of Chaos
The night before the mission, Dante found Lara outside, staring at the stars that were barely visible amid the city lights.
— Can't you sleep? — he asked, coming closer.
— I can't afford that luxury. — she replied, without taking her eyes off the sky.
He was silent for a moment, before speaking:
— Lara… if this goes wrong…
— It won't go wrong. — she interrupted, but he placed a hand on her shoulder, turning her to face him.
— Just listen to me. — he insisted. — If this goes wrong, I want you to know that I would do it all over again, from the beginning. Even if it meant going through all of this again.
She felt a lump in her throat, but hid it with a smile.
— You're a terrible strategist, if you think so.
— Maybe. — he said, smiling back. — But it's the truth.
The Attack on the Matrix
The infiltration began at dawn. The group used equipment that Shira had modified to resist the complex's defense systems.
The corridors of the core were narrow and dark, with the sound of alarms echoing in the distance. Every step was calculated, every movement synchronized.
When they reached the central room, they encountered fierce resistance. Heavily armed guards were positioned, ready to defend the array at any cost.
“Let's clear the way,” Alma said, activating a holographic shield to protect the group.
The ensuing battle was intense. Shira, connected remotely, provided instructions and bypassed security systems to give the group an advantage.
Meanwhile, Lara and Dante advanced to the core. They found the leader of Project Aurora waiting for them, an enigmatic smile on his face.
“Welcome to the future,” he said, before activating a mechanism that began to destroy the facility from within.
A Final Sacrifice
The final fight was frantic. Lara and Dante faced the leader while the rest of the group worked to deactivate the matrix before it was too late.
Caio, Shira and Alma joined forces to reverse the system’s collapse, while Lara, exhausted but determined, faced the man who had started all the destruction.
At the last moment, with the core about to explode, Shira managed to gain emergency access to extract the remaining data.
“We have to get out of here!” Alma shouted over the communicator.
Lara and Dante managed to take down the leader, but the victory was bittersweet. With the building crumbling around them, the group narrowly escaped, leaving behind the destroyed core and the promise of a new beginning.
