Chapter 26:

Chapter 26 - Confrontation

The Girl Who Saw It All

I didn't need to climb the tower, if I wanted I could've reached the top in a blink of an eye. But I chose to, I wanted to get a feel of this body, or lack of it. I no longer saw The End, after I accepted it she no longer showed herself. I thought that it would feel unnatural, my body was made of information after all. But it didn't.

Just like that, all my doubts were gone and questions answered. This power was convenient, I knew about everything life had in store for me and could change the world itself to suit me.

Soon, I reached the very top of the tower. I stood in front of the white steel doors for a second before walking through them.

The office was a stark contrast to the entire district, it looked exactly as what I'd seen when I died. I had thought before that it would be a big confrontation. Demi would question his father and he'd learn the truth, Lia and I would be shocked speechless, and Rina would try to fight him.

I never did get to tell Demi about how he was created.

My eyes fell on the corpse of the president slouched against the wall. His body was broken in many parts and his head smashed in. It was all so anticlimactic.

I raised my arm and pointed the gun at the chair, it's back facing me. "Why?" I asked even though I already knew the answer.

A beat of silence lingered before the chair spun and she faced me. Her purple hair cascading down her body and bandages covered any exposed skin from her neck down. Her gaze was cold, but I could see the surprise behind it. She looked different, the person I grew up with and cherished for a long time was gone.

"For revenge," she said simply. "And you? How did you get here? I don't see your guard dogs anywhere."

I lowered my gun and walked up to the chair in front of her, "They died, but that's what you wanted, right?"

She leaned back and folded her arms, "I was expecting more of a reaction if I ever saw you again." She paused before smiling mockingly at me, "Doesn't feel so good to see one of your loved ones die before your eyes does it? It's a shame I couldn't see how Demi died."

I glared at her, my jaw clenching, "You killed Lia. If you didn't close those gates she would still be alive."

"If we're being honest I was trying to kill you. Your obsession with ending this apocalypse was a hindrance. I thought why not just put you out of your misery and handle your dogs later, but it turned out better than I expected," amusement and gratification coated every word as she spoke.

I clenched my fists so hard that if I had any blood it would bleed. It took everything I had in me to not leap over this desk and strangle her.

I willed myself to calm down before asking, "And your revenge for your father, satisfied?"

All color drained from her face at my question, "How...?"

"Your father went against the president and in return he killed him, you saw and wanted revenge. After bidding your time away you secretly made connections and planned to steal serum 079, look how well that turned out," I explained calmly.

She abruptly stood and slammed her fist on the desk, "Don't you dare mock my father's death! He was a great man and that bastard killed him in cold blood! He told him not to continue the research on the serum, when the president refused he threatened to step down. My father didn't want to see those people die anymore, sure they knew that it might happen but he had too good of a heart to continue his research!!"

She was breathing heavily as she finished her rant. I respected her father, but I wanted to get back at her for mocking my friends.

She exhaled, trying to calm herself.

"I did learn a bit about what that serum is, but I planned to steal it to expose him to the public. I didn't expect..." she trailed off.

It seems that there was still some lingering guilt not matter how much she tried to ignore it.

I continued for her, "You didn't expect someone to swap the serum out with a failed sample."

She glared at me, "How much do you know? Did Demi-"

I interrupted her before she slandered Demi's name with her speculation, "He didn't know anything."

She eyed me for a bit before continuing, "I don't know how much you know, but I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I didn't know that I had caused this until around the time we met Lia. While you were unconscious I got a call, Bran Solone, that's what he said his name was. He told me that he knew what I did and he captured all of my people already. He wanted to strike a deal." She paused before slumped in the chair and held her head, "I didn't want to believe it at first, that what I thought was serum 079 was actually a deadly zombie virus. But when I couldn't get onto my people I became panicked. I called him again and he told me about what he did to you...I was so scared May! I didn't know what to do or who to talk to, I killed thousands of people trying to avenge my dad!"

Silence lingered in the air, she was expecting me to say something but when I didn't she continued. "After my talk with you, I decided to take responsibility for my actions. I was going to turn myself in, but then I had an idea. If I helped you get to D1 we could pin it on the president, I'd get my revenge and we'd figure out how to stop this thing from spreading!"

"So, rather than telling me my father used me as a guinea pig, you used and lied to me to make yourself feel better," I stated coldly and she snapped up to met my eyes.

Hurt filled her eyes, "I wanted to tell you, I was going to! But you betrayed me.."

I scoffed at her words, "Excuse me for killing my own mother, do I need to apologise for killing my father too?"

Her hurt changed to horror, "You...you killed your father..?

I gave her a cold smile, "I was avenging Demi."

"For someone who you've only known for a little over a month you-"

"Those people who I've known for such a short while became everything to me! And you took them away," I seethed as I interrupted her.

Her face became cold once more as she said, "I see, then that's all we have to say to each other."

Not wasting any time she flipped the desk in my direction, lifting it with ease and then throwing inhumanely strong punches, crushing the desk into pieces.

She stood, wiping her forehead before her eyes widened in shock, "How..?"

"While you've been munching on zombie corpses I've been more accepting of my situation," I said calmly, standing from the chair.

"You threw away your humanity?" She asked incredulously.

It seems like these so called villains were more appalled by my actions than their own.

I rolled my eyes at her, "Oh please, calling the kettle black much? You've eaten so many zombies that your body is decaying from the inside out."

She clicked her tongue and attempted to crush my skull into the floor.

I appeared behind her, "That power to change to and from a zombie isn't so useful now is it? And what about your mom? Couldn't bring youraelf to eat her"

She swung in my direction.

"But at least there some good in it for me. After all, zombies only die when you crush their heads," I stated as I held her shoulder and punched her.

Blood spluttered out her mouth as she grabbed me and tried to knee me. Her attacks went through me and I took my other hand and ripped her in half.

Screams and curses fell from her mouth as she panicked, "What the hell are you?!"

I smirked as I watched her flail around on the ground. Then I stomped her, again and again and again, until a bloody mess lay on the floor.

Tears fell out of her eyes as they rolled up, saliva an blood running down her chin. I only needed to crush her head and she'd die. And I did, I picked her head up and held it with both hands. She begged me to spear her one last time before I squeezed, her skull crunched and her blood splattered on my face.

Rina was dead and I had gotten my revenge.
