Chapter 73:
Crimson Power Black Feather
They walked out of Sora's apartment. Yoshi was someone Sora would love to see anytime, but then she suddenly remembered how they left off the last time they talked. She even cried, like a histrionic, she thought. He looked normal, detached as always. She cleaned her throat and stepped on the stairs.
"Yoshi, thanks for boba, I am very happy to have it!"
"No, it's okay, I wanted to cheer you up."
"Yes..." She looked at her hands, wondering how to make it less awkward. "Yoshi...Um, well, we met last time, and I got mad..."
"Yes, but, you were right to, I think?" He looked at her, his eyes narrowed. This confused Sora.
"Are you mad that I was mad?"
"What?" He looked puzzled, "No."
"Okay then, let's forget all about it!"
"If you say so," he said calmly walking down the stairs. This struck a nerve.
"Uh, you always agree! That's what made me mad last time! You never say what you want. Do you not want to talk about it, or it's just easy not to talk about it?" Sora frowned, looking down on him.
He turned around and blinked, "I... am not sure. Wait, are you mad again?"
"Yes, I am mad! I just told you why! You make me frustrated. You are too calm!"
"Am I? I guess I am."
"Uh," she stomped in fury. "Why are you like this now?!"
"Like what? Am I not always like this? I mean, I don't really feel too many emotions, except, well," he contemplated something for a moment. "Resentment? I get mad sometimes?"
Sora clenched fists and stared at him intensely, he could see her eyes rimmed red. She blurred out,
"Do you even like me?"
"What?!" He stared back. "Why are you asking this?" A weird feeling of fear crept up. Rationally he couldnt understand this emotion.
"What do you mean? Aren't you like 700 years old or something? Why are you such a slowpoke?"
"Who?" Yoshi felt like he was losing the point of conversation as if something important was slipping.
Sora rolled her eyes, "Of course, you have no idea about Pokemon, why would I joke like this? Why do I even like you so much, I don't understand, there is no reason behind it, besides that we spent some nice time together. I can do it with other people, and yet, here we are, I feel stupid, because it's been not that long, and I push my own feelings onto the other person," she paused, sudden realization hitting her, "maybe I am the problem then?" She sat down on the floor, crying. "I am ruining it again, aren't I?"
Yoshi, now absolutely uncertain of what was going on turned his head around helplessly. He sat down next to her.
"Listen, I... I feel like I am not capable of love, to be honest."
She stopped sobbing a looked up, "What?"
"I... I don't know how to explain it, I just feel less emotions than others?"
"Everyone is capable of love, what are you talking about?" Sora's eyes were running around like mad, "Are you telling me, all the time we spent together you never liked me?"
Yoshi forced down another wave of anxiety, he seemed calm from the outside, "I don't know. I mean it was always fun to be with you, and your power..."
"What?!" She jumped up, "So it was about my power after all? Do you want it? Just take it. I am done, I don't want it! Eat me alive or whatever you need to do. I don't want it anymore!"
Her cry was louder than he could bear. He stood up to look at her but felt his body twitch.
"S- I won't take it! I don't need it, okay? And we agreed that I'll figure it out, right? Don't overreact like this, what if it was some other yokai, they might have eaten you by now..."
"Why are you like this?!" She kicked him in the chest with her fist, "I hate you, you are heartless. Absolutely heartless." When she raised her eyes, she saw his intense gaze. Her tears were streaming down her cheeks, her hair was now a mess from all the erratic movements she'd made. Yoshi looked at her, trying to understand his feelings towards her. It couldn't be love, he read about that in the books, and he wasn't like that. So what was it, was it only the power that all this time made him so interested in her? She did look like something he wished to consume, still. It never changed from the moment he saw her. It wasn't something one might call love. He couldn't do this to her.
The moment paused, and Sora had an epiphany: now! Otherwise, it might never happen. Her gaze lingered on his lips, then his eyes. Those eyes... were not cold, she realized. He was always so detached, smiling randomly as if not certain when one should smile. Saying hurtful things. But these eyes, they were full of pain. That was enough. She decided not to think, and just do it. She stood on her toes, and in a moment their lips touched. She didn't even close her eyes, afraid she might miss it.
The second he felt her lips on his, Yoshi's eyes widened, and his body froze. He stood there flabbergasted. He didn't respond. He couldn't respond - something was wrong. He realized that if he did anything, he might consume her whole. He didn't even feel how his wings appeared behind him and started flapping like crazy. The noise made Sora move away. After he didn't react to her kiss she felt disappointed, but now for the first time she saw the wings, and in such a situation too. Her eyes were wide, as she observed them move.
Yoshi opened his mouth, "I... have to go."
"Wait-" She tried grabbing him, but he'd already disappeared. "Well, shit. Curse me, for trying to find love. Uh, I hate this!" She sat down on the stairs dramatically. "Hope no one saw him. Uh, why does my head hurt so much?"
Finally, she decided to forget it and move on, bear the pain (from the heart beating fast, her head, and probable heartbreak too). The best decision she came up with was to just go to sleep. With difficulty, she managed to walk back to her door.
What she didn't know is that Yoshi's heart was beating even faster. When he appeared in the forest next to his temple he was still quite confused, and his desire to consume Sora had never been this high. He breathed heavily. This, this wasn't good, that is what a predator feels before he kills someone.
note: can you feel that we are getting there? I need some time to prepare everything
