Chapter 3:
The Storm Within
As Zukafu walked further away, Mary immediately went after him, shouting "Hey!" But despite hearing Mary's voice, Zukafu continued walking while drowning out her voice. She attempted to call him out, saying "Hey! I'm talking to you!"
Zukafu walked in the direction of Toudou High, wanting to go back to his normal routine of mostly procrastinating during break.
Meanwhile, the Spider-Enigma had suddenly disappeared which worried the still injured Naoya and Luna Kami as Enigmas were beings that controlled a human as hosts to survive.
To describe an Enigma, it is best describing them as parasites that use a liquid-like shell to cover their hosts while they bring rampage amongst whatever lies in their paths and for the human host itself, it can vary from being a willing one in which can allow the human and Enigma itself to cooperate but with unwilling hosts, the Enigmas are forced to place them in a deep sleep while using their minds to fuel their destruction.
Luna and Naoya's plan after the Spider-Enigma was defeated was to eliminate the Enigma itself and examine the host in whether it was a willing or unwilling one. But now that it has escaped, more troubling events may occur.
The sky began to return to it usual baby blue colour with the weather immediately returning to being sunny.
The school dome also began to deactivate after detecting the trouble being dealt with. The crate-like object that kept the students of Toudou High safe slowly returned back into the school and into the gymnasium.
And upon the metal shields were also being deactivated, Mary's friends ran out of the gymnasium and upon leaving, they saw Mary beside Zukafu who appeared relieved to see them.
"Mary!" Said Yuno with a worried expression. She ran to her best friend at high speed and immediately hugged her, saying "Thank goodness you're okay!" She then lightly punched her in the shoulder upset, saying "Why the hell did you run off like that? We were so worried!"
Charao then caught up to Yuno and scoffed, remarking "As if! It was more of you acting like a paranoid psycho! Amirite lads?"
Then, one of Yuno's gal friends smirked and said, "The only fool that was paranoid was you, Charao!" She then began to mimic the words and the way Charao spoke, saying "Oh my god, Mary! She's going to end up like an ugly skeleton! I can't stand it! My beautiful Mary!"
Causing most of the girls begin to laugh as well as the guys while Charao became annoyed by this.
He then realised that Zukafu was also out and pointed at him, asking, "Hey, how come this tool here's out here as well?!"
Suddenly the headmaster approached Zukafu, asking "Mr. Kami, I'm assuming that both Luna and Naoya have dealt with the issue."
Zukafu nodded and answered "They did an exceptional job as always..."
She then asked "And as for you..."
Zukafu answered "I did nothing. I remained useless as always."
She then said "I see..." appearing disappointed, likely due to him not doing anything, she then turned around and said to the students "The crisis has been averted, please return to your classes..." She then turned to Mary, saying "And I wish to speak with you in my office, miss Amano."
Mary sighed and answered "Very well." She then followed the headmaster to her office. Her friends watched her off but then their attention turned to Zukafu who had already left the scene.
There was anger within Charao's eyes with signs of jealousy and annoyance. He clenched his fists as he watched Zukafu walk away and thought to himself, "What so special about that no-good-outcast?"
Time passes on until it reaches the end of the day. And after class, Zukafu stayed behind, at his desk, while everyone had left. And while he waited, he flicked an old lighter that has since ran out.
After all the students were gone, he began his job as the school's janitor. Despite being a student, he had requested to be enlisted as the school's janitor and the reason being that he enjoyed the isolation and the limited social interaction that was offered during the role.
Zukafu began his job and worked efficiently throughout his time while he remained quiet and focused. Time continued passing while Zukafu was making the school spotless. He reaches the final class that he has to clean but when he enters inside, he finds Charao and his waiting for him as they ambush him and hold him captive.
"Now I've got you!" Said Charao with a smirk. Charao's bulky friend held Zukafu by his neck, with the broom and pinned him on the wall. Charao pulled up a chair and placed it in front of where Zukafu was and sat down.
He said "Now tell me, what were you and Mary doing during the lockdown?"
Zukafu answered bluntly "She was stupid enough to exit school DURING the lockdown and WHILE there was an Enigma visible across the district!"
Charao stared at him, not believing his words, says "I don't believe you..." He then gets up and throws the chair to the side, "I'm thinking there's something between you and her... Willing to spill the beans?"
Zukafu scoffs and answers "As if... Mary was out there and I tried to take her back with the others!" His tone sounding serious, "Both Naoya and Luna are struggling enough with protecting the districts by dangerous Enigma's and thats a lot to deal with! Humans are the last things they need to worry about!"
"What..." said Charao, puzzled in his expression, "Then... You were out there because..."
"Because I'm responsible for those humans safety!" Said Zukafu, finishing his sentence.
While Luna and Naoya are responsible for defending the districts with Enigma's, Zukafu is in charge with safely escorting any humans that have not been sent to the bunker and the developers behind the lockdown system rely on Zukafu to do this task as their research into more advance techonlogy has yet to be discovered.
Back to Charao, he stared at Zukafu with anger but this anger suddenly changed to self doubt as he somewhat respected the task that he does.
He remembers a flashback of him being with his younger sister being happy and then one moment when there was a lockdown, he and his parents were panicking as Charao's sister was missing. They then heard the sound of the transporter and they saw her.
She immediately explained how a mysterious man found her at the park while she was being kidnapped by an unsuspecting man and saved her and then bringing her to the transporter.
He then said to his friend "Let him go." Leaving them puzzled, he then shouted "I said let him go!" To which they did.
Zukafu immediately took his broomstick and bucket and began cleaning, ignoring the three. Charao along with his friends then apologised and left him to continue with cleaning.
Zukafu then said to them, "Get home safely..." appearing unsettled about saying it, as if he never said to someone before at all.
Charao and his friends left and after another hour, Zukafu finished cleaning and he left the room. Outside, he found Mary waiting for him.
He remarked "Came to ambush me and interrogate me like your friends from before?"
Mary answered, "No." She then took out a sheet of paper and handed it to Zukafu, she then explained "From this moment on, you and I are to become lovers."
Zukafu took the sheet of paper and skimmed through it, not appearing shocked at the fact that Mary said that they were being lovers.
He sighed and said "Should have known my father would have come up with something like this... Are you sure yo-" He looked up and saw Mary unexpectedly blushing while she fiddles with her hands.
"You've got to be kidding me!" Said Zukafu in a blunt manner.
