Chapter 19:
Black & White: Spirits, Love, and Traditions
Standing over 8 ft, I become the war god. My body is pure, dark copper. My braids hang low from my head like snakes, and my muscles are so heavy, there is a collapse in the earth below where I stand. I have only one goal in mind. Save Sakuya. Kill everything else. I can't tell why saving the girl is more important—I just feel the need to do so.
The night is dark and full of monsters.
Creatures.
Spirits, resembling women with bloody smiles.
There are dozens of them.
They are all looking at me.
They had tried to kill me.
It was time to kill them.
***
I sprint forward.
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
I catch them off guard.
Breaking into their ranks, I begin to break them.
I swing my arm like a hammer repeatedly.
Broken ribs.
Cracked skulls.
Flying teeth.
Blood.
...
I smash faces.
Disconnect limbs from bodies.
Pick up and toss like ragdolls.
Rip in two with my bare hands.
But they keep coming.
...
I keep it up.
Break.
Crack.
Remove.
Repeat.
Break.
Crack.
Remove.
Repeat.
...
They begin to jump and cling onto me like spiders.
Trying to penetrate my skin with bites.
I swat them off, then stomp their heads into the ground.
Insects!
All of them!
Useless.
I continue my search for the girl.
Breaking bones.
Breaking bodies.
Breaking bones.
Breaking bodies.
Breaking bones.
Breaking bodies.
Until eventually—
I see her lying on the ground.
Unconscious.
...
The last of the insects huddle up and become one.
That one runs off.
I open my palm, and a dagger slowly forms.
I throw it after the runner.
It passes clean through her throat.
The head and body fall in separate directions.
It is over.
...
I walk over to the girl on the ground.
I pick her up and cradle her in my arms.
She is small and fragile.
Bruised and wounded.
I try to remember her name.
I can't.
But I know where I must take her.
I walk.
***
At the temple steps, I don't bother climbing them.
I leap.
Then drop.
VOOM.
A crater forms as I land in the center of the courtyard.
There is a rumble.
A shake.
People rush out of the house.
They freeze when they see me.
I set the girl down in front of them.
She's awake.
She is looking at me.
She calls a name.
"Jumo?"
It sounds familiar.
Like a distant memory.
I try to leave.
My body crumbles.
I fall beside her.
My bones shorten back to their original size.
My muscles shrink. My copper layer peels off.
My hair grows back into my head.
I no longer feel strong.
I no longer feel powerful.
But I feel tired.
So I close my eyes.
And sleep.
