Chapter 7:

Memories of Mr. Warm “The Joker” and The Big Five’s Moniker and Insignia

The Quietus Cloud, The Witch Curve, and The Five - A mathematical, historical, and philosophical tale set in a world where the sun is about to end and a cloud covers the entire earth in eternal twilight

It is the evening of January 1st. For the first time in my life, my name Essä Eruhi Schonewolken will have to deal with the police in a serious case.

I remember when I was little, I had to deal with the police. I was six years old and on vacation at the time. At that time, I found a wallet on the street and reported it to the police. A few hours later, the owner of the wallet came to my house. He gave me some money as a token of his gratitude. The incident was covered in the school magazine and local online news in my area.

And now, about twenty-two years later, I have to deal with the police again because of an incident. This time the incident also happened during the vacation. But this time, what I faced was an incident that shocked the international world.

Fermi Isai Herzwarm, whom I usually call Herr Warm or Mr. Warm, is not an ordinary figure. He is a collaborator of Mr. Enrico Starkgeist, who created an energy solution for the Earth with the reactor they created. He is a member of the Herzwarm family, one of the richest families in Deutschtonia. He is the figure behind OSHI sake.

Also, Mr. Warm is a former member of High of Five.

My car kept moving, taking me to the police station in the neighboring state, which is Bavaria state. As the wheels of the car rolled, memories kept popping up in my mind.

I will never forget when I met Mr. Warm: when I was six years old—the same age as when I had my run-in with the police. He was in his 50s at that time. At that time, Mr. Warm came to my school to lecture at a science event for children.

A few years after that, I was able to meet Mr. Warm several more times. In junior high school, in high school, and at university, I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Warm again. On each occasion, the time I talked with Mr. Warm increased. All of our meetings were related to science and knowledge.

Of course, I remember the time when Mr. Warm came to my school to fill a science event for children. Warm was the only member of the High of Five who—as scheduled—attended my inauguration ceremony as a member of the Five. I remember how he smiled at me at that time. I remember when he shook my hand and patted my shoulder.

At that time, Mr. Warm said, “I remember you. I first met you when you were little, and I was happy to be able to see you from a tiny point. Then you went through lows and highs, and now you are an algebraic curve.”

I remember how I got to know Mr. Warm better after I worked at the same institution as him. In the first year and a half, I was placed at the same research site as Mr. Warm. I remember on one occasion I told Mr. Warm that he was one of the figures who inspired me.

I felt that Mr. Warm was a senior figure who supported the progress of his colleagues. He admitted that he preferred collaboration rather than having to work alone, and competent colleagues will make us more competent. At that time, Mr. Warm quoted an expression from his grandmother's language, “Sannin'yorebamonjunochie.” The expression more or less means two heads are better than one.

I dug into my memory again, playing back the event when Mr. Warm praised my comics and drawings. Knowing my talent, he ordered some drawing commissions. At that time, Mr. Warm praised me, “Your first name means ‘essay,’ but it turns out that besides being skilled at writing essays, you are also skilled at making comics.” I don't offer commission services, but specifically for Mr. Warm, I am willing to make some drawings for him.

I don't forget when Mr. Warm said that he will get old no matter what. He once said to me, "Excuse me, can you repeat what you said? I feel like I'm having sudden hearing loss." I remember Mr. Warm complaining that his back was getting more and more painful.

I remember how he often interacted by throwing out riddles and jokes. I remember how he often became an unpredictable person. From all those incidents, I came to understand from my own experience why Mr. Warm was nicknamed "The Joker" among the other High of Five members.

Yes, each member of High of Five has their nickname. Currently, the five members of the High of Five and their respective nicknames are

1. Agnesi Sulis Zeusleben, nicknamed “The Angel”

2. Braum Bertram Wernherluft, nicknamed “The Wynorrific”

3. Celebiates Iyilipmann, nicknamed “The Clown”

4. Dorothy Mariam Szyschulz, nicknamed “The Wire”

5. Enrico Smarta Starkgeist, nicknamed “The Norms”

Four of the five members of the High of Five are the same people who were there when Mr. Warm still held the official title of Wissenschaftsfeldmarschall. When Mr. Warm left the Five based on his personal decision, his replacement was Mr. Iyilipmann.

I remember that after several months of working at the Five, Mr. Warm told me that he had planned to leave. He told me and several of my colleagues that he would carry out the plan in about one or two years. He said that he planned to focus on running a business from a product that he researched—which I later learned that he meant OSHI sake.

At that time, Mr. Warm said to me, “This time I have reached another turning point in my life curve. This Insignia and everything about the Five will be a beautiful memory for me. I am grateful to the Five, and I will not be vocal about the Five.”

The insignia that Mr. Warm meant was a personal insignia that could be worn by members of the Big Five. Before being appointed as a member of the High of Five, prospective members could submit an insignia that they had personally made. The advisory board had to approve the design of the insignia before it could be used as an insignia on the Big Five uniform.

The personal insignia had to be drawn above the Five's symbol in the middle. Later, the insignia would be placed on the left chest, aka above the heart. For regular members of the Five, the insignia worn on the left chest is only the pentagon insignia symbol of the Five.

The personal insignia worn by the current members of the High of Five are as follows:

1. Mrs. Zeusleben wears the personal insignia “flaming sword.”

2. Mr. Wernherluft wears the personal insignia “paper clip.”

3. Mr. Manougian wears the personal insignia “cone.”

4. Ms. Szyschulz wears the personal insignia “unknot rope.”

5. Mr. Starkgeist wears the personal insignia “two mathematical symbols of norms.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Warm has the insignia ‘IJK’ with a background of a yellow-colored circle. Maybe you can guess that IJK comes from the name of the reactor that Mr. Warm and Mr. Starkgeist created. IJK is an abbreviation of ‘Isochron Jonquil Kugelblitz’ or ‘Isochron Jonquil Kugelblitz.’ The jonquil color is a type of bright yellow, named after the jonquil flower. While 'Kugelblitz' means 'lightning ball.'

Mr. Warm once joked that IJK is not only an abbreviation of his masterpiece but also a tribute to the vector basis or element basis of a quaternion. The vector basis of a quaternion is 1, i, j, and k. Quaternion itself is a number system used by Mr. Warm and Mr. Starkgeist to design the movement of Kugelblitz in the energy reactor they created.

But, speaking of jokes, people joke more that IJK stands for ‘Ich bin der Joker-König’ or ‘I am the Joker King.’ The pun would be following the nickname ‘The Joker’ given to Mr. Warm. Mr. Warm himself does not mind that Joker jokes.
