Chapter 10:

The Fates’ Philosophy and All Members of the Five Become Persons of Interest

The Quietus Cloud, The Witch Curve, and The Five - A mathematical, historical, and philosophical tale set in a world where the sun is about to end and a cloud covers the entire earth in eternal twilight

“This is not Schadenfreude,” Felsenmann repeated.

“Yes, yes, yes, no,” a man agreed with Felsenmann. The man was named Ralm Ramzu Gobelin. He is currently the head of the Fates organization.

Another speaker, a woman, also spoke up, “That’s right. We are talking about this, talking about Mr. Herzwarm’s death, of course, not by laughing at this heartbreaking event. We are also grieving.”

The woman was named Agnieszka Kowalska. She was the head of the Fates branch operating in the Republic of Polskachia. The republic is our neighboring country that borders our territory directly to the northeast. Kowalska probably had business in our country, coincidentally when the incident of Mr. Warm being found dead occurred.

I can guess that the podcast was filmed at the same location as the other regular their podcasts. They did it in their studio located in their headquarters in our country’s capital, Berlin.

Members of Parliament Felnsenmann and Gobelin live in Berlin, and Kowalska is on business in our country, which is why three important figures of the Fates were able to make a podcast with all of them face-to-face shortly after the news of Mr. Warm’s death broke.

Felsenmann confirmed Kowalska’s statement, “Yes, that’s right. We express our deepest condolences to Mr. Herzwarm’s family, friends, and colleagues.”

Gobelin added in their same tone, “May the relatives and acquaintances left behind by Mr. Herzwarm remain mentally strong and resilient.”

I randomly pressed the video’s progress bar again. Gobelin was heard to express his thoughts, “This is definitely an incident that has nothing to do with us. This is … this is … this is…”

Seeing Gobelin, who seemed to have not found the right words, Felsenmann spoke up, “To me this is like a ‘Black Swan.’ You know, black swan is a term for a rare event that is difficult to predict, an event beyond our expectations that also has a big impact”.

Kowalska said, “I agree. This is not an event caused by a witch that magically happened. Witches no longer exist in this era. Some of our members do sometimes call the members of the Five—Mr. Herzwarm was also once a member of the organization—‘witches.’ But we all know that the term is a figure of speech. This is certainly a rare thing that—

I didn’t hear Kowalska’s series of words until the end when I randomly pressed the video’s progress bar again.

Gobelin was heard to express his opinion, “In this sense… It could be that you are someone who lives in an environment that does not believe in—or even hates or laughs at—the principles of the Fates, and you seem comfortable and agree with such an environment. But could it be that underneath all that, you are actually wondering? Is this true? Is that true? What if this? What if that?”

Kowalska snapped her fingers as she said, “Exactly. That is when the philosophies of the Fates will feel right; they will feel reasonable and enjoyable. The philosophies depicted in our Fates symbol will seem like a light for our life journey.”

As the name suggests, the Fates believe in the fates that inevitably befall humans. They believe that only members of the Fates have the right to experience a “restart” of their lives in another world after death. The members of the Fates believe they will be separated into various other worlds.

The members of the Fates believe they will gain “very high status, abilities, and skills” in that other world, even god-level abilities in that other world. In other words, the members of Die Schicksale will start their lives with many conveniences. With that convenience, they still have another task, which is to unite the various other worlds inhabited by the members of the Fates.

Meanwhile, in this world, they believe that the Earth will end up being swallowed by the sun. Humans will not be able to escape into space and can only accept their fate of being roasted to death. Only the members of the Fates will survive and not be tortured by the heat of the sun.

The members of the Fates believe that they will find a means of transportation that will save them. The means of transportation will look like a wheelchair, which will run on a rail that will also suddenly appear as if by magic. The device will send them to an elliptical lake.

The Lake of the End will allow the members of the Fates to enjoy death in peace, while non-members of the Fates will have a very different fate. After that, they will meet the members of the Fates who have died before. Then, the division of which other worlds the members of the Fates will live in will begin.

The Fates have had such a belief since the Quietus Cloud had not yet appeared. At that time, their members numbered only a dozen people. When the Quietus appeared, their members grew; until now, their number has reached thousands.

Felsenmann agreed with Kowalska's last opinion, "That's right. In any case, it seems that the light of the Fates philosophy will shine even brighter."

Gobelin spoke up, "But unfortunately, in such a situation, sometimes there is a conflict in your thinking that is influenced by your surroundings, such as your family, your friends—"

"Tch!" I skipped that part with a little curse, and once again I pressed the video's progress bar randomly.

I saw Kowalska state, "We can guarantee that if there is a murder, none of our members are involved."

Gobelin asserted, “That’s one hundred percent true; our members would not be involved in such crimes.”

Felsenmann spoke at length, “Es ist nichts so fein gesponnen, es kommt doch an die Sonnen. I hope the police can complete their task well. We don’t know the truth yet, and I hope we all will find out. Maybe it was suicide, maybe the perpetrator was from another country, or it turned out to be a close party—who knows, maybe the Five’s internal affairs are not going well. Who knows?”

I ended the podcast streaming video.

Hearing Felsenmann’s last sentences, I remembered some netizen comments on the internet who were suspicious of the Five: “The Five may always be a group of odd people, and odd people are like ordinary people like us; they won’t automatically always be on the right track. I hope that if they do bad things, they are not untouchable.”

(***)

I have arrived at the Bavarian state police headquarters. At the entrance, the guard who saw me open my car window immediately recognized me—of course, there was already information about me on the officer's gadget.

He then performed several checks with a scanner. After making sure there was nothing dangerous, he input my profile and then let me go. "Please come in, Wissenmeister Schonewolken," he said.

Wissenmeister—Wissenmeister for men and Wissenmeisterin for women—is a term of respect that the general public often gives to members of the Five and former members of the Five.

There is actually no written rule that members and former members of the Five must be called by the title meaning ‘master of knowledge.’ Most people call us that way; only a small number do not—an example of those who do not call us by that title are followers of the Fates.

After I parked the car in the available space, I immediately walked to the room that the police gave me in my invitation letter. When walking in a corridor of the office, I found someone with a familiar face.

“Hey, Nanzu,” I smiled as I greeted the owner of the face and extended my hand.

“Oh, hey, Schoneken,” Nanzu said, extending her hand as well, showing a smile on her tired face.

Anzu had just returned from a vacation with his family, and he immediately responded to the police summons.

As we walked, we chatted. “It seems like we’re the first members of the Five to come here to give a statement,” I said.

Nanzu responded, “Yes, and we probably won’t be the last.”

I agreed, “Yes. At this point, the police probably consider all members of the Five to be persons of interest.”
