Chapter 20:
The Quietus Cloud, The Witch Curve, and The Five - A mathematical, historical, and philosophical tale set in a world where the sun is about to end and a cloud covers the entire earth in eternal twilight
I packed my luggage to immediately check out of the Drei Weltkugeln Hotel. While my hands were checking the objects, my brain was thinking about something. Go to those coordinates. "Find and challenge the mini Pommelte ring sanctuary with your irises," wrote one of the sentences in Mr. Warm's puzzle.
The Pommelte ring sanctuary mentioned in the sentence, in the Deutschtonian language, is called Ringheiligtum Pommelte. This ring sanctuary is located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, near a village also called Pommelte. The ring sanctuary is a historical site that has existed since ancient times in our country. The site has even existed for around 4000 years.
According to research, the ring sanctuary was used as an astronomical observatory or a communal meeting place at that time. It is estimated that the ring sanctuary was used by humans at that time for around 250 years. The Pommelte ring sanctuary was first discovered in the modern era thanks to aerial photography from an airplane.
The Pommelte Ring has a function and design that are similar to the historical site of Stonehenge in the Brettaine Union. The difference with Stonehenge is that the Pommelte Ring uses wood—that's why some people call this ring sanctuary "Woodhenge," as a comparison to Stonehenge. As the name implies, the site is circular, with a diameter of 115 meters.
Actually, in the same state, in Saxony-Anhalt, there is a building like the Pommelte Ring that is much older. The circular enclosure structure I mean is a structure called the Goseck Circle. It is estimated that the Goseck Circle is 7000 years old.
Like the Pommelte Ring sanctuary, the Goseck Circle was also first discovered in the modern era thanks to aerial survey photography. The circle consists of concentric ditches arranged in a circle with a diameter of around 75 meters.
In the Goseck circle, there are three symmetrical palisade holes to the north, southwest, and southeast, which provide the entrance gates. The first entrance is at a point parallel to the point where the sun rises and sets on the days of the winter solstice. The second, smaller entrance is at a point parallel to the summer solstice. The third entrance represents the astronomical meridian.
As a history graduate, I have visited those two ancient circular enclosures several times.
But this time, I had to “excavate” the Pommelte ring sanctuary that Mr. Warm mentioned and “examine” it with my iris. I think Mr. Warm almost certainly meant that the miniature ring he mentioned would be the gateway to which my iris would be the key.
Meanwhile, I already had the hotel key card. When I had already exited the hotel room, I coincidentally found Nanzu also exiting his room, which was located at the end of the corridor. I greeted him first, “Hey, Nanzu, do you want to go out or take a short walk?”
He answered while walking towards me, “That’s it. I happened to wake up and feel bored in the room. I wanted to try to see the atmosphere at 5 in the morning. Yes, even though the sky is covered by the Quietus Cloud, it’s quieter, and—hey, are you going to check out yet?”
It seemed that Nanzu’s last sentence was a question like that because he saw that I had already brought my things. I answered, “That’s it. I won’t be staying here long. I suddenly have another plan; I want to go somewhere else to spend the remaining vacation.”
Nanzu, who had long known my nature, was not surprised. He commented, “Somewhere impromptu as usual, huh?”
I nodded my head while answering briefly, “Yes.”
We continued our conversation while walking. Nanzu asked, “Where will you go this time?”
I answered honestly without revealing the details, “Republic of Polskachia.”
Nanzu asked again, “How long?”
I answered honestly, “I don’t know. Maybe a little while.”
(***)
January 2nd, morning. I have returned home to get the tools that I might need. Now I have entered the alleinbahn. My car has traveled tens of kilometers out of the total of more than 800 kilometers that I have to travel.
From the very fast movement of the car, I can still see the scenery around the area that I am passing. A few minutes ago, I saw trucks carrying logs and leaves of shisu trees. As is the case in the country of Bharat—and in other countries—the trucks are the suppliers of various experiments based on the thoughts of Mr. Enrico Smarta Starkgeist.
In addition to the IJK reactor, which is the standard for energy sources, Mr. Starkgeist's idea that the shisu tree is the key to conquering the Quietus Cloud has become the standard for countries around the world. The two scientific standards are something that is common and ordinary; the two standards have become the "norm." Mr. Stargeist himself admitted that at his current age he could create two norms for the whole world.
Because of that, he chose to use two mathematical function symbols, “norms,” as the personal insignia of the High of Five members. Norms in mathematics are symbolized by double vertical bars (|| ||). Norms in mathematics are functions that map matrices or vectors to non-negative real numbers, which help to measure the magnitude of matrices and vectors. Because of that insignia, Mr. Starkgeist was nicknamed “The Norms” of the Big Five.
When my car was on the alleinbahn tracks around the farmland, I could see the work of other High of Five members. On the farmland, there were large objects in the form of giant cones. Equally giant in size, the cones had varying sizes. Some were 12 meters high with a diameter of 38 meters, some were 16 meters high with a diameter of 54 meters, and so on.
The cones functioned as a place to plant various plants—especially plants for human food. With these cones, vegetables and fruits can be produced at a lower cost, with less energy, and with less water. In addition, the various vegetables and fruits produced have a longer shelf life.
The cones are arranged upwards or downwards—but none are arranged sideways. Because of this appearance, many people call them giant ice cream cones, giant mushroom cones, or giant pyramid cones. However, these cones have the official name "Kegel der Bauern," or "Cone of Farmers," from the creator of the cones.
The creator of the cones is none other than one of the members of the Big Five, namely Mr. Celebiates Iyilipmann. However, Mr. Iyilipmann did not get the moniker "The Cone" from his works. People prefer to call him The Clown.
The nickname The Clown was given to Mr. Iyilipmann, who, according to people, behaves funny. One of his funny habits, for example, is when he laughs suddenly during an interview. Because of that behavior, of all the Big Five members, he was the most hunted by the media. The media preferred to cover Mr. Iyilipmann, whose character was like that. Mr. Iyilipmann himself did not mind the moniker and did not mind the media making him their limelight.
Of the five members of the High of Five, it seems that only Mrs. Agnesi Sulis Zeusleben, whose work I could not see during my journey using Guldendorf. Mrs. Zeusleben is mostly involved in the manufacture of satellites and rockets, including rockets for experiments to perforate the Quietus Cloud. Of the more than 800 kilometers of the Alleinbahn route that I passed, there were no rocket research and launch sites that I could see.
Mrs. Zeusleben, who is a satellite and rocket maker, chose the “flaming sword” as her personal insignia of the Big Five. Mrs. Zeusleben chose the object as her symbol because she felt that the rockets that were launched and formed a trail of smoke and fire reminded her of a flaming sword.
The flaming sword itself is a sword that shines with visible fire. The flaming sword is often associated with mythology and legend, one of which is the story that flaming is an angel's weapon. Mrs. Zeusleben was nicknamed “The Angel ” because, apart from her flaming sword insignia, she is also a member of the Big Five, whose attitude and behavior are said to be similar to an angel.
