Chapter 4:
Beta Test? We got more than we bargained for in our game’s beta test.
With the crown curtly dismissing everyone to the command of a nearby set of guardsmen who had been summoned to assist in getting our group to the adventurer’s guild for the appraisal of the skills they potentially possess. As the group is led back out of the castle they leave through the grand oak doors of the hall, a soft sinister laugh could just about be made out. As they walk back through the grand stonework of the main entrance, instead of taking the road straight down the hill like they had before instead the guard lead them around the edge of the castle wall, until reaching the back side of the castle grounds where the descent down the hill the castle is built upon began. The only sound that could be heard from the group is the patter of their walking against the paved road, as the road flattens out, they start to pass by more buildings. Most of them look to be homes with a few merchant shops interspersed and of course the odd pub, tavern or inn evenly spaced out between the other buildings. Soon enough a building that looked nothing like the surrounding buildings appeared, this almost looked like a government building from the world which the so called gods called home, which meant that this was probably going to be our destination. Almost as if sensing the curiosity from the people behind them as to whether this incongruent building would end up being our destination one of the guards turned towards the group.
“That building you are all looking upon is not our destination but is the house of knowledge, filled with books and other intellectual materials. The guild however is not much further but is a more conspicuous building as it does not need such grand architecture.”
The guard finishes his short spiel and returns to facing straight ahead once more ignoring the existence of the group. And as they said a sign hanging from a building not too long later was advertising that inside the walls from which it hung was the Adventurer’s Guild. The leading guardsmen held the two doors open and gestured to enter the guild, so they all shuffled inside and stood in the lobby section waiting for someone to give out more exact instructions on what to do next. Before anyone came out to greet the group, the guards closed the doors and positioned themselves to bar any outsider from entering and interrupting our assessments. Like magic once the doors had fully closed a desk clerk appeared.
“Welcome travellers, I have been expecting your arrival. I understand that you do not know the extent of your powers, and thus have come to us because of our appraisal system being regarded as the best across the nearby lands.”
“Why thank you, I am Ilev and I am the leader of this nomadic guild. Thank you for the warm welcome, may I ask what it is we’re going to be asked to do?”
“Of course, one at a time each individual of your guild will be taken into the back room over there and a specialised orb will read your abilities and will assign a class to you that will appear on your adventures licence alongside a rank ranging from E to S based on how strong you are within the assigned class. Each appraisal should last around ten minutes.”
Upon hearing the explanation Ilev turns to the group.
“Well? Who wants to go first?”
No one moves a muscle, or looks anywhere close to wanting to volunteer to go first. Lexa breaks the short stalemate so that things can actually get done in a reasonable amount of time.
“I’ll go.”
“Alright Lexa, we’ll sort the rest of the order out while you’re taking your assessment.”
“Alright, well here I go. I’ll see ya on the other side.”
Lexa says with a smile, before taking a few less than confident strides towards the door that holds the orb that’ll decide how the rest of the time spent in this world will turn out. Whether that'll be the easy road or a much harder one. Reaching out Lexa grabs the handle to the door and gives it a turn and pulls open the weathered wooden door, and with one last look back Lexa steps inside letting the door click shut behind her. The room slowly illuminates and, on a small ornamental table, sits a singular orb. lexa instinctively reaches her right hand out and place it upon the orb, once she makes contact with the surface of the mysterious object it starts to glow faintly and windows of text rapidly open and close in front of Lexa's eyes. She can’t make out too much of what they say but of the words Lexa can read she recognises them as some of the debug terms, once again confirming they are inside the world of our created game as the windows continue to pop in and out of existence at increasingly rapid rates. The rate of the window’s appearances and disappearances seemed to be increasing with the strength at which the orb was glowing, as everything had started slow and dim now everything was now rapid and blindingly bight. That was until everything stopped. And the room was back to only having the dull illumination it had just after Lexa had closed the door. With nothing happening when she touches the orb anymore, she leaves the room and waits to be handed an adventurer’s card by the clerk, but instead of the clerk waiting outside the door it was a city guardsman, the rest of her friends also having a guardsman standing behind them.
“By the order of the crown you are being exiled from the Castle city of Ehccihster and the lands surrounding. Now you are all together we will escort you out by the nearest gate.”
She shoots Ilev a questioning look, he just shakes his head and so Lexa don’t attempt to resist the guardsman and like the rest of the group she follows them out of the guild and through the streets towards one of the gates within the outer walls of the castle town. Once at the wall the guard shove the party beyond the gate and promptly close it, physically showing that they are no longer welcome within those walls.
