Chapter 3:

Too many questions

Dragon's Laud

Once inside the place isn't so bad. It appears these people can use magic so it looks like she was able to make the small room bug free, dry and actually comfortable. The place is buried in books and scrolls. There is a small iron stove in the tiny kitchen area with a sink full of dirty dishes. Just the one single sitting chair is surrounded by stacks of books in the sitting area. The bed in the corner of the shack was not made with the quilt waded into a ball in the center.

"Sorry the place is a bit messy." Sonja says picking up a pile of books off a dinning chair just to set them down by some more on the floor. Then she slides some books around and pulls a glass orb from the center of the table.

"Hello?" Asks a crackling voice.

"Hey you alone?" Sonja asks.

"I'm alone." Says the voice.

"Good. Can you tell him that he can talk?" She holds the orb in front of my face and I can see a young boy with short green hair.

"Oh ah, you can talk now." He says shyly.

I look at him funny. Till Sonja takes the orb back.

"Thank you Kem, see you soon." She smiles at him gently.

"See you sis, thank you for helping me out." He beams back til I hear a gasp. "Got to go." Then the orb goes dark. Sonja sighs and sets the orb down back into the center of the table.

"Can I make noise?" I ask myself before firing off a few of my questions. "I can! What is up with this place? Not only the extravagant house/mansion but the dingy attic did not belong as part of the house. Then your house (if you can call it that) looks as if it will cave in on itself any minute, just to walk into a library. Who has so many books? Wait, could a return spell be in one of these? And that dragon talked, then the fact that there are dragons here."

"Maybe you should have stayed quiet." Sonja says cutting off my brigade of questions.

"Says the kidnapper." I glare back at her.

"It was for your own safety." She mumbles.

"What? How?" I ask.

My stomach growls very very loudly. I could feel some heat in my cheeks. Sonja whips her head away and covers her mouth to muffle a quick snicker till her stomach growled louder. I see her ears turn red.

"You said I wouldn't starve. Is that true?" I ask gently, trying to do what Thomas would have done but with so much less confidence.

"Y-yea I will make sure you're fed." She says scurrying to the door. "I will be right back. I keep some ingredients out in a shed and the herbs taste best when freshly picked."

She grabs a robe and it flutters around her as she puts it on.

"Wait you're leaving me here?! You said it wasn't safe outside though!" I retort.

"Not safe for you. Creatures in this part of the woods know I'm the scary one." She says while ducking out into the dark.

The door clicks shut behind her. Either the creatures really aren't all that bad or she is a force to be reckoned with.

Either way we can't cook dinner with dirty dishes. How do you even get water into the sink? I look over this spout with a longer handle. Pulling it up, it squeaks but no water comes out. Is it broken? That could explain the dirty dishes. Maybe I can fix it. It felt like a rod was inside maybe it came loose? I continue to pull and push on the handle hoping something would connect. Water eventually trickles out.

I fixed it! Then the water stops. I continue to push and pull. More water comes out til I stop. What in the world? Who cares, water comes out. Cold water though. I see a tea kettle on the stove. I fill that with water and set it on the stove. Opening the stove door I see an attempt was made to light a fire in it. I move the kindling around and light the fire from a lighter from my pocket.

After heating water to have warm dish water, I get all the dishes cleaned up. As I'm drying them, I notice the cupboards are pretty bare and there are no dishes in the cupboards. I start sticking things where I think they go.

"Sonja has been gone awhile." I say to myself.

The door busts open and Sonja drags in a giant slightly burnt rat by it's tail.

"I got dinner!" She announces while I'm standing on a chair across the room to get away from them.

"Dinner?! I thought you had a shed with food already in it and going herb picking?" I'm blown away she dragged in a rat and expects us to eat it.

"Oh, the shed was raided by these guys and for herbs." She digs through a pocket on the robe. "I got rosemary to help cover up the oil scent these guys produce and some chives to go into a soup."

Her gentle smile of confidence of what she accomplished melts away the feeling of fear of being in this new place. She went out there to bring food back and had to face how many of these by herself? Her resilience reminds me of Potato. I'm still not sure if I can cook and eat a rat though.

"You ready to get off the chair and help me?" She smirks.

"Yea yea." I say getting down.

"Oh wow! My kitchen is clean! Do we have to eat and dirty it?" She asks. My stomach gives her all the angry noises. "Alright alright."

Sonja points me toward vegetables in the house, I get to cleaning those and she goes out with the rat and comes back in with meat that looks like chicken.

"So, your brother Kem." I break the silence a little while we are chopping and mixing things into a pot. "He was trying to summon a dragon? Was that how you got yours too?"

"Yes, it's tradition here that a group of your friends help you summon your own dragon." She kinda explains. "Do they not do that in your kingdom?"

"Magic doesn't exist where I'm from." I say even though water from a tap would be somewhat like magic here.

"So you're from the Sapian kingdom?" She tilts her head.

"No, I'm from Japan. That's apparently on a different planet." I sadly state.

"Then that means..." Sonja starts mumbling to herself.

"Oi. Where's more fire wood for the stove? It's going out." I say bringing her back from her thoughts.

"I'm sorry for stealing you away from your family." She says sadly.

"To be honest, they are probably grateful I'm gone. Everyone but Potato."

"Potato?" She asks reaching through the window to grab a few logs that were stacked near it.

"Potato is a chiwawa that was rescued from some bad people. She only liked me so I do worry about how she is doing." I state.

"Chi?... I think I might be able to at least let you see her." Sonja says a little hopeful.

"Really?" Excitement has returned to my voice.

Sonja nods and taps on the crystal ball on the table. She chants something about seeing what one most desires. Then I see Potato and Tasha curled up on a little girls bed as she is sound asleep.

"Potato was adopted." I sit down dumbfounded. "She looks so happy though."

"Well thats good to know." I hear Sonja stirring the pot on the stove.

On the orb I see her glance over at me and the orb changes to a image of me with some purple in my hair.

"What the?" I look closer and the orb goes dim and I can only see a funny reflection of my face. Sure enough though, there is purple on the underside of my hair. "Why is my hair purple!?" I about scream.

"You mean it wasn't always purple?" Sonja asks.

"No! Black is my natural hair color. Could you guys dragging me here do this?" I ask.

Sonja ponders for a moment.

"Maybe when I healed you? You know, I should tell you about the prophecy." Sonja says quietly bringing two bowls of soup to the book covered table.

"Prophecy?" I ask.

"So there was a prophecy about a summons that will either bring prosperity for the Kingdom of Tarra or it's destruction. Reading old texts I found that someone tweaked the writing 200 years ago." She blows on her soup.

"Don't tell me, you think I'm this summons?" I ask a little pissed off. She probably doesn't want to send me back.

"Your eyes are what made me believe you're the one. They dance like the auras in the north and are beautiful." She says with flushed cheeks.

No one's ever complemented my eyes. They tell me they are scary.

"The prophecy goes...

A [d]ragon will be summoned.

With hair black and purple.

With eyes of ice and lights.

In the hands of his summoner, prosperity or death to the Tarra Kingdom.

~Elder Guy

... so I think you're the summons because the translation of dragon changed when our current leader took charge. Low and behold he has an ice breathing black dragon. So we need your help to tare this kingdom to the ground."

"Wait what?" I say nearly choking on my soup.
