Chapter 518:

Freestyle fumble

En Passant Grandmaster

While Hagemi had faced off against Yuusuke and Mimoko against Žygimantas, Yuzuha had decided to challenge Jackie to a match, or rather, Jackie had hounded her relentlessly for a match, and after having enough of her pestering, decided to face her. However, like with Hagemi and Yuusuke, it was a 960 game.

The pieces were then arranged with the queens being on the a-file, the bishops on the b and c-files, the rooks on the d and g-files, the knights on the e and h-files, and the kings on the f-file. Yuzuha opened by moving her pawn to d4 while Jackie moved her pawn to g5. "Hahaha! Even with the positions randomized, the Coca-Cola Gambit is played with pawns, and is eternally superior!" Jackie gloated.

"I disagree," Yuzuha politely smiled as she captured the pawn at g5 with her bishop.

"Fool! I have a rook on guard!" Jackie laughed as she captured the bishop at g5 with her rook.

"Ugh, uh oh," Yuzuha trembled as she moved her pawn to b4.

"That's right! You fell for my Coca-Cola Gambit's main trap!" Jackie proudly huffed as she adjusted her glasses and moved her pawn to b5.

"Can you really call it a Coca-Cola Gambit though? The position is different from normal," Yuzuha frowned as she moved her pawn to d5.

"Of course I can!" Jackie fumed as she captured the pawn at d5 with her rook.

Yuzuha blinked for a few seconds before smiling. "Whelp, a win's a win. Checkmate," she giggled as she captured the knight at h8 with her queen, winning the game.

"I- Impossible!" Jackie cried as she sunk to her knees.

As all the matches concluded, Yuusuke sat dejected. "It all started when we formed the chess club... No, I could beat that masked guy- No, I fucked up, but he got too arrogant the first time and I could draw... Really, what was my last notable feat other than beating that guy? Ever since becoming vice-president, I've faced nothing but shit. Really... All it's done for me is make me a joke. That's all I am... a joke..."

Though his thoughts were not spoken, Žygimantas could see them clearly on his face.

"So you're the reason I was called. Under the rules of these chess centers, should I feel like it, I can offer you a challenge. Points are required, but should you play, you'll simply have to pass a trial."

"I was watching. You play easy... What's that gonna do for me? I need to improve, not play against a practice bot," Yuusuke scowled.

"And when did I get degraded from man to machine? But if you can't even pass a trial like this, then just how can you beat a grandmaster?"

Yuusuke clicked his tongue. "Fine, I'll play your game."
