Chapter 519:

Pattern recognition

En Passant Grandmaster

Like Mimoko's game, the game opened with pawn c4 and knight c6, but then things deviated with Žygimantas moving his pawn to h4.

"You kidding me? You're going easy on me? Fuck off!" Yuusuke fumed as he moved his pawn to e5.

"If it's so easy, then try winning in under 10 moves," Žygimantas scoffed as he moved his pawn to f3.

"With how you're playing, sure," Yuusuke scowled as he moved his bishop to e7.

"That's the point. I'm playing this way because this is a trial," Žygimantas stated as he moved his king to f2.

"The hell!? How am I supposed to improve if this is all I gotta deal with!?" Yuusuke fumed as he slammed his knight down on f6.

"Žygimantas let out a sigh as he moved his queen to c2. "Have you forgotten the basic principles of chess?"

Yuusuke glared and shook his head as he moved his knight to d4.

"Then prove it," Žygimantas glared back as he moved his queen to d3.

"I need to catch up to the others. Playing patterns isn't gonna do jack shit," Yuusuke snarled as he gritted his teeth and moved his knight to h5.

"And how do grandmasters get good?" Žygimantas asked as he moved his pawn to g4.

"They get good. Check," Yuusuke growled as he captured the pawn at h4 with his bishop.

"And how do they get good?" Žygimantas asked as he moved his king to e3.

"Smarts. Check!" Yuusuke replied as he moved his queen to g5.

"And they get smart through pattern recognition. Perhaps if you focused more on that, you could see things better and not blunder so much," Žygimantas scoffed as he moved his king to e4. "And should I also mention that should you beat me, you can challenge me at full-strength, but I doubt you'd win as is."

Yusuke paused, frowning and staring down at the board in silence. Žygimantas was cutting into him deep, even though he could see victory.

"Really, I really am just a joke. Everyone, following this match, I resign a vice-president. Checkmate," Yuusuke dejectedly mumbled as he moved his knight to f6, winning the game.

Everyone but Okisato gasped in shock. He could see this brewing the moment Žygimantas first appeared and challenged Mimoko.

"Seems I have some more work to do now. Don't worry Yuusuke, this is a good move for you. The stronger you get, the less we need to worry about the Desperados targeting you."
