Chapter 11:
Our Town in another world
In Machiko's limousine, Ikebukuro frowned as she heard music coming from her pocket.
"Oh, is that your phone?" Machiko asked.
Ikebukuro nervously smiled as she pulled out her phone to find it was in fact the source of the music. "My apologies, I'm still not quite familiar with all this."
"Take the call. I don't mind."
Ikebukuro nodded, but that wasn't the issue. The issue was that someone was calling her, or rather the phone she had picked off someone Bisento had killed.
"Hello?"
"Mikasa!?"
"...!? Ngh!" Ikebukuro grunted as she quickly hung up.
"Everything alright?" Machiko asked.
"Wrong number," Ikebukuro nervously smiled as she pocketed her phone again.
...
In the woods, Rosa panted as she ran with her phone to her ear. "That voice... Who was it? It didn't sound like Mikasa. Is she busy? Maybe texting will work."
...
Ikebukuro jumped out of her seat as she felt a slight vibration coming from her pocket.
"A message?" Machiko asked.
Ikebukuro smiled and nodded as she pulled out her phone again, casting a small illusionary spell to hide her scowl from Machiko.
"What's that?" Bisento asked telepathically.
"It's a notification about one of the squares, the Lines one. It says there's a new message," Ikebukuro telepathically responded back as she opened the app in question.
There before her was a message from Rosa, asking her to come help her.
"Who even is this? Sorry, but I'm not going to risk things going awry by humoring you," Ikebukuro thought as she prepared to close the app.
However, her finger hit the message tab by mistake, causing her to freak out and accidentally send a blank message to Rosa.
"Mikasa?" Rosa texted back.
Ikebukuro gritted her teeth and shut the whole phone off.
"Are you alright?" Machiko asked.
"Y- Yes, just some nuisance bothering me," Ikebukuro nervously smiled.
"Oh I understand. Spam messagers are a drag on society. That's why in my city, I fight to have those bastards condemned with fines and prison."
"What a lovely city and ruler you are."
"Oh, you flatter me."
...
Rosa trembled as she stared at the blank message. "What's going on? Is Mikasa down? Did that elf get her? ... Internet's good, so let's try reaching out to more people," she thought as she opened Tuitter. "HELP! In the woods being chased by elf. Send help!" she shouted to the phone's voice to text speaker.
...
In her room, Muki raised an eyebrow as she was notified of a new Tuitter post. "The hell? 'In the woods being chased by elf'? She talking about woods outside of town, cuz there's no woods in it. But that handle... Belongs to one of those joggers from Usagi I think. Let's try n' track her..."
A few key presses later and a blip had appeared on the makeshift map screen a little ways down from the south end of the town.
"Tch, no GPS means I gotta use this setup as the beacon. Also means the topography's an unknown. But if they can post online, I should be able to communicate with them..."
...
Rosa gasped as she read the response to her post. "'Video call NOW'!? I don't know who this is, but I gotta chance it."
Setting up the video call, Rosa quickly came face to face with a smiley face background.
"Show me what's around you," Muki growled, using a voice filter to disguise her voice.
"Who are you!?"
"Want me to save your ass or not!? Move the damn phone around so I can see shit!"
Rosa nervously did, all while wearily trying not to trip over anything and drop the phone.
"Can't tell jack shit. Well my map says you're close to town so keep on running forward."
"How close are we?"
"Can't tell. And what do you me "we"? That other jogger with you?"
"You know about us?"
Muki bit her tongue as she realized her slip-up. "Missing person's report said two joggers from Usagi went missing. Now tell me about this elf coming after you."
"She's a dark elf with long white hair named Winona. She's forced me and Aoi into a scenario straight out of Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game". She can use wind magic too."
Now Rosa had Muki's full attention. "Magic? You're sure?"
"Y- Yes. I- ...! I actually got some proof! Let me send it to you!"
...
Muki lifted her head up as Rosa uploaded a video to her Tuitter.
"My... friend, recorded this," Rosa stated.
Muki clicked on the video and watched it, speeding through it, but also trying to catch any important details. When the part showing the magic came up, she put it on normal speed and watched, biting her lip in frustration as she watched.
"I knew those elves had something on them from the footage I saw, but now it's clear as day. Son of a bitch, and there's still that super fast elf out there and who knows how many more. This is gonna be such a pain. I hope that girl is as obedient as she seems to be intelligent, otherwise she'll die like an idiot. Jenna!"
Jenna let out a sigh. "You're not coming?"
"Why would I put myself in danger? Besides, I can control you at anytime, so I take control of you when you save them, it counts as me being there. Now get going. Taking control of people is a draining thing for me, so I only wanna do it when need be."
Jenna nodded and began heading out.
...
Rosa panted and panted as she spotted what looked to be a clearing just a few feet ahead. "We're almost there. I remember last night, that the forest directly bordered town. We make it town, we can hide underground," she thought.
But as she reached the clearing, horror overtook her face. She could see the town, but now it was a great distance away. A grassy field populated with strange plant-life and fauna was all that stood between her, but with someone like Winona in pursuit, this was the worst kind of scenario.
"Aw, you think you could come back the way you came in? Nope, sorry. I swung around that town to the forest here. Means ya gotta run across a large open plain to get back to those tall buildings," Winona's voice rang out.
Rosa frantically turned to look behind her, just in time to see Winona leaping across the branches in the distance, bow in hand.
"Now this is hardcore! We gotta dodge all the way back! I'm so game!" Aoi grinned as she grabbed Rosa by the wrist and charged into the field.
