Chapter 12:
A School Christmas Story
James was standing outside in a blizzard. The snow blew around him as he walked forward. The snow just got taller and taller as it fell from the white sky onto the ground, making his long legs sink farther and further into the hills of white that surrounded him. Despite the freezing cold and now ravaging itself around him, James didn't feel cold. Instead, he felt like it was room temperature all around him.
He didn't know why he was walking along at a quicker pace than he could have been able to. It was nowhere near as fast as John Paul could walk in the snow, nor could he just walk around like it was a sunny seventy degree day on a grass covered plain. It was like walking in a somewhat messy room while a fan was blowing air at you. He felt compelled to keep walking as long as he could.
It was light, the great being Dio From Jojo’s bizarre adventure was egging him on with his voice. No, he was egging him on. James could hear Dio’s voice, giving him encouragement to continue on. Jonathan’s voice, also from Jojo’s bizarre adventure, joined Dio’s. They willed James to continue walking through the blizzard, no matter what happened to him.
He did this for several days, and throughout that time he never got tired or felt the need to quit. He fell once around a day ago, but felt no pain from it. He barely even felt the impact of the fall. Another thing is that the voices never stopped encouraging him. They kept it up all day and night as James kept walking. His legs never got sore and he never got close to running out of breath. He ran for a full day two days ago and felt fine the whole time, only stopping because running got boring.
Every once in a while he saw an animal in the shape of a horse standing in the snow, or trotting along next to him. It was all black with the word “censored” Written on its stomach in big white block letters. They usually didn't notice James, but when they did, they usually needed in greeting, turning their faces to him. They had no eyes, nose, or mouth that James could see, inside all being pitch black, like a black hole in the shape of a horse was standing next to James.
A few days later, James was getting bored. He felt little stimulus from the weather and had just seen whiteness upon whiteness, just like the school with its grey walls. As he went to talk about wanting to play destiny, however, he found he couldn't talk. His hands shot up to his face, and he was relieved to find that his mouth was still there. He tried to move it, and found out that he could, but could make no noise out of it other than the shallow sound of his own breaths. Just as he was about to give up, he saw a light in the distance. It was a small shining star. The light given off was a pure white, making all other light he had seen before look like a cheap copy of the light he was seeing now.
James ran towards the light as fast as he could when he realized something. The voices that were in his head had stopped. The only noise he could hear was the sound of the blizzard all around him and his footsteps through the packed snow. That did not keep him from running toward the light, it just made him run faster.
He ran for an hour or so, never getting tired or sore as the light slowly got larger and larger as he got closer to it. As he did, the blizzard lessened around him and the snow on the ground got thinner and thinner until he could see solid earth. Grass started to grow on the ground when the blizzard and snow fully disappeared. It was only in patches at first, but the more James ran to the light, the more grass there was. Despite all the changes around James, the sky stayed the same snow white that it had been. It almost seemed like a ceiling. I didn't seem to move and looked flat at first glance.
After a few more hours, James reached the light. Despite how bright it was, it was easy to look at directly. It was a glowing ball of pure light, or part of one. Only around a fourth of the ball was actually put together and floating in the air. The rest was scattered in pieces on the ground. The pieces were small, almost the size of a pea. James went over to the light. He didn't know why, but he was determined to fix it. It was like a force that compelled him to, beating out his free will. He went to touch the floating ball to check it out before fixing it and.
James was standing outside in a blizzard. The snow blew around him as he walked forward. The snow just got taller and taller as it fell from the white sky onto the ground, making his long legs sink farther and further into the hills of white that surrounded him. Despite the freezing cold and now raviging itself around him, James didn't feel cold. Instead he felt like it was room temperature all around him.
It took a few seconds for James to process what had just happened. He didn't want to play destiny anymore, or even watch the best TV show of all time in his opinion, Jojo’s, and worship Dio. He wanted to see the light again, more than anything. The same force compelled him to do so, and it was stronger than when he had been right next to the ball of light.
He started running towards where the light was, desperate to see it again. The voices didn't come, instead, it became quiet while he was running. He could tell that the blizzard was making a noise, but filtered it out as he pressed ahead. He had to see the light. He didn't know why, but he was drawn to it.
He ran for days and days through the snow, still not seeing a glimmer of the light. The horse shaped animals were appearing less than last time, and the ones he did see seemed bigger and older. Eventually, he saw a glimmer of light in the distance. It was the light. He had found it again. James ran towards it again through the snow. He tripped multiple times in his way but got up every time as quickly as he fell. He had no pain or injuries from any of the falls so he was as good as new every time.
Like last time, the blizzard seemed to thin out as he got closer to the light until it disappeared altogether to reveal a brown earth. Grass popped up here and there as he ran until he was in a field of grass all over. He reached the ball of light around one day quicker than he did the time before.
The light was the same as last time, floating in the middle of the field of grass. Shattered pieces were scattered below it, being unmoved since the last time he had seen it. As James slowly walked toward the light, one of the shards of light around the size of a pinhead started floating. While the average shard was still the size of a pea, this one was smaller. It floated up and attached itself to the glowing ball. James walked towards it. He thought of picking up the pieces, but decided against it. He felt the same force that had been guiding him tell him that picking up the pieces was not an option. Instead he went and touched the light as it floated in the air.
James ran as soon as he got his bearings. The force was even stronger now, guiding him to the light that filled his mind. James was not thinking of much now, only the light. He had to go to the light. There was a reason, even if he didn't know it. It just felt like the right thing to do. It was something necessary that had to be done no matter what.
As he ran, all the horse shaped animals were gone. The only sign of one he saw was on the third day. A train of hoofprints ran aside James for half a day's time before suddenly disappearing. A clump of snow was next to the final footprint. Was there a reason for that or just coincidence James didn't know.
He reached the light again in the field of grass. Another piece of the light flew up and attached itself as he approached. It. James had no hesitation this time. He walked up and touched the light.
James was back in the blizzard. This time he started running as soon as he got sent back. He heard no sound, not even the sound of his running. It was all filtered out as he kept running. He thought about how he had to get to the light. He compared the light to destiny and Jojo’s, and debated on which was better. Destiny and Jojo’s were still better than the light to him, but every loop he thought about the loop more and more.
He reached the light, a piece of it reattached itself, and he got sent back. James repeated the loop over and over, the drive for the light getting stronger and stronger every time. He reached a thousand times in the blink of an eye. James had gotten faster and faster, to the point it only took two days to get to the light. Despite that, the light looked almost the same as before. The shards that had been attacked were all there, but they were so small and the light so big that they were barely noticeable.
Soon after James reached ten thousand times. Slightly less than thirty years had passed, and there was barely a dent in the light. The change now was noticeable, but only to someone who looked very closely. James just thought about the light now. Thoughts of Jojo’s and Destiny weren't even popping up in his head now. He hadn't thought of either in years. It was an obsession. The drive for the light was unbearable now.
James reached a hundred thousand times. His mind at this point was broken. The word light was repeated over and over inside. The drive moved him more than anything else. It felt like it had control of his body, moving his legs faster than James could on his own. He felt his muscles rip, but they healed just as fast, giving him zero pain. It was all to get to the light faster. The blizzard had started to lessen the more loops he did, but it was noticeable till now. What was once a rigging blizzard now looked like a snowfall that could cause two or three inches of snow at most. Not a light snow, but not heavy by any means. The earth also appeared earlier and he ran on it for longer.
The light was noticeably larger now. Maybe three eighths of the light was completed, compared to the two eighth’s when he started. Whenever he reached the light, it always had the same reaction, with a shard coming up from the ground and attaching itself to the light. It has been like this for almost three hundred years now.
James hit five hundred thousand times. The snow was almost gone now. WIthin an hour of running, all traces of snow were gone, and a meadow lay before James. Flowers had started to pop up here and there. Most of them were yellow and white, but every once is a while an orange flower would appear in the mix. James didn't noce any of this however. His body was different than when he started over thousands of years ago. He was well built like an olympic sprinter and ran constantly like his life depended on it. His mind was a different story. He had no thoughts anymore, he only ran on pure instinct and drive towards the light, over and over.
The ball of light was mostly complete now, with the pile of shards under it smaller than when he had first arrived at the light by a large margin. Only the smaller pieces were in the pine now. All the bigger ones were already attached to the ball of light, which was around seventy five percent completed at this point. James didn't stop wherever he saw the light anymore. He went up to it and tried to grab it like it was the most important thing in the world to him. Everytime he went back to the beginning, and ran back as fast as he could.
He reached over a million times. It was the last run. There was only one shard left under the almost complete ball of light. There was no snow anywhere to be seen and the meadow stretched all the way to the beginning now. Flowers populated the field. There were almost as many flowers as there were blades of grass at this point. The yellow and white flowers had lessened and the orange flowers had taken over. For every yellow or white flower there were around fifty orange ones around them.
James had gotten to the speed that what once took him days upon days now only took him one. For over ten thousand years now he had been running and running non stop towards the light, and this would be the last time he would do it.
After a few hours he reached the light and did something he had not done in over five thousand years, he stopped. When he did, his mind returned to him and he could think again. The drive for the light however did not go away. It was an addition, a craving that James had to get fulfilled, but that same drive told him to stay still, and James listened to it.
The last shard, smaller than the tip of a needle, flew up from the ground and fitted itself into the light. James started at it unblinkingly. He was unable to comprehend something so beautiful. The light then started to spin. It started off slowly and got faster and faster until the spin was untraceable. It got higher in the air until it was around twenty feet high.
The light then started to change shape. It grew legs first, then arms right after. Next was the torsa and then the head. Long hair sprouted from it and went down to around the chest. A long dress appeared and covered the being of light and it was complete.
She floated down to the earth as the light faded. She wore a pale shoulderless white dress that went down to her toes. The edges and short sleeves had gold on them that reflected her own natural light. Several strings shot up from her arms and legs and one from her head like a marionette doll being controlled by a puppeteer.
James looked with surprise at the woman. He knew exactly who she was.
The desire for the light faded and split off from James, creating a raging fire that took the shape of a human. It had no real features and the only thing James could tell about it was that it was a man.
The being of fire walked slowly towards the woman and held its arms out towards her and she took them. They hugged and took each other's hands. James was looking towards them when he noticed something. The strings on the girl went into the sky and fell back down under the earth and went back up where the being of fire was standing. Inside him was a wooden hand controller with the strings attached to it. It was moving when she moved, controlling her every action.
James took a step back, and then two. He slowly walked away from them, trying not to make a sound. He looked behind him to make sure he was not stepping on anything, then back again to make sure they didn't notice him. A few feet away from them, after looking backwards, he took a step and heard a crunch under his feet.
He looked to see an orange flower where he had stepped that he was sure was not there beforehand. The burning being turned towards James and started to run after him while the woman of light stayed still.
James put his years of work to the test and ran as fast as he could. At this point, he was faster than any human on earth by a large margin. The being of fire was even faster. He slowly caught up to James and created a sword in his hand. It was burning and see through, fully made of fire like the man. The only noticeable characteristic about it that James could see is that it seemed to have a jewel of some kind in the middle of the hit. The sword was swung through the air and hit James in the stomach. Despite falling to the ground, he didn't feel pain from the wound, nor did blood come out from it. When he looked at it, an empty void was inside himself. He put his hand in it and felt no resistance as his hand went deeper and deeper into the wound. It was to the point that it should have been in the ground before he stopped.
The sword then cut off his head as James’s sight slowly blurred out until he saw nothing.
