Chapter 4:
Betrayed by my group, I walk alone in the shadows of the other world
The princess Margarida and I left the castle; she was carrying a bag. Outside the palace, there were four guards. The princess spoke with one of them, who handed her two papers. She then approached me and gave me one of them, which looked like a map.
“These are magic maps. They contain all the information about the city and can track every movement you make while using them,” said Margarida.
There was a division on the map, a very bright point and a very dark point.
“Why are there these two fields?” I asked her.
“We use this to differentiate the commoners from the nobles,” answered Margarida.
“But don’t you help them?” I asked her.
“We help with a small amount, even if it’s not much. In fact, I sometimes go there, and just seeing those people smiling already makes me happy,” Margarida replied with a smile.
What a cynical smile, you’ve just confirmed to me that you are rotten, but don’t worry, I will educate you today.
“How about visiting the kingdom’s restaurants and clothing shops?” asked Margarida.
I agreed, but with the intention of not buying anything. I just wanted to waste time until the medicine began to take effect.
Margarida then put her map away in her bag, since she already knew the city and wouldn’t need a map. We then passed through several shops and restaurants, but I didn’t buy anything.
“What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you didn’t like any of the places?” asked Margarida.
“The money isn’t mine, so I didn’t want to buy anything. When I get my own money, I’ll buy something,” I replied.
Of course, I was lying.
“So that’s the reason, but don’t worry, when you have money, you can pay,” said Margarida.
I saw a stall selling bottles of water. Since it was very hot, it would be good to buy some for us, especially for Margarida, since drinking water stimulates the body to want to pee.
“Hey Margarida, it’s hot today, how about we buy two bottles of water to drink?” I asked her.
She agreed. We bought the water and drank it. Margarida immediately began holding her dress with both hands.
“Let’s visit new places,” I said excitedly.
Margarida looked at me with a desperate look.
“We’ve already visited practically all the places,” said Margarida, completely distressed.
“How can you be so sure? Does the map have a function to record where we’ve been in the last few minutes?” I asked her.
Margarida fell into complete silence. She leaned close to me and whispered in my ear.
“I really need to pee, I feel like I’m going to do it in my clothes,” Margarida whispered.
I whispered back in her ear.
“Don’t worry about that. In the world I came from, there was a trick to control the urge. Besides, ending the tour now that I’m enjoying it would be disrespectful, don’t you think?” I said with a smile.
“You’re right, that would be disrespectful to you, a hero. But what is this trick to avoid peeing?” asked Margarida.
I told her it was just to close her eyes, but she said it was impossible to walk like that. And indeed, it’s impossible to walk with closed eyes. So I asked if there was a carriage. She told me there was a coachman with a cart right at the entrance of the nobles’ area.
I asked her if she could manage to walk there, and she said yes. We reached the place and saw the coachman. She told me his name was Werner. I told her to let me talk to him, since speaking too much might make her need to pee faster. She agreed.
“Hello, I am the hero summoned to defeat the Demon King. You must be Werner, right?” I introduced myself.
“Yes, I’m Werner. What do you and this girl need?” asked Werner.
The princess kept her head down, so he didn’t notice. I whispered in her ear.
“That’s Princess Margarida. I asked her to show me commoners’ clothing shops, and I’d like you to take us there. By the way, does she hate commoners?” I asked him.
He seemed pressured by my question.
“She loves everyone the same, regardless of social class or race,” answered Werner.
Of course, the real reason Margarida was acting like that was another, but I had to lie to make him take us to the commoners’ area.
“I’ll prepare the carriage to take you,” said Werner.
“By the way, drop us at the best commoners’ shop. After that, you can rest and only return when it’s getting dark,” I whispered to Werner.
Werner didn’t understand the reason but agreed, thinking it was an order from the princess. I bet he wouldn’t want to contradict any member of the royal family.
Werner then prepared the horse and carriage for us. I told Margarida to get in. She climbed aboard, and I followed. Werner then set off with the carriage.
“Princess, now you can close your eyes. When we arrive at the shop, you can open them again,” I said.
She closed her eyes. Werner drove the carriage, reaching the checkpoint between the nobles’ and commoners’ areas. These filthy people really do such a thing. Werner managed to speak with the guard and passed through. As we entered the commoners’ area, a slightly unpleasant smell became more noticeable as we got farther from the nobles’ district.
Werner stopped at a clothing shop he found.
“Let’s get down now, open your eyes,” I said with a smile.
She opened her eyes and got down. I followed. The look in her eyes showed she was terrified of being there.
“Thank you very much, Werner. You can go now, come back for us when it’s dark,” I said.
Werner drove the carriage back to the nobles’ district. Margarida looked like she was about to scream but gave up. Instead, she glared at me as if she wanted to strangle someone.
“Why did you bring us here and give Werner orders as if they were mine?” asked Margarida angrily.
“I wanted to come here. Besides, you said you love the commoners, so there’s no problem coming here, right?” I answered.
She had no response. I knocked on the shop’s door. A woman who looked around 40 opened it. She was shocked to see the princess in her shop.
“What are you doing here?” asked the shopkeeper.
Certainly, anyone would be speechless at seeing a princess visiting them, which surely never happens.
“I am the summoned hero, and I decided to buy clothes here,” I replied.
She was overjoyed to hear this.
“Please come in. My name is Candelária,” said the shopkeeper.
We entered the shop. It was clear that the clothes were of good quality, though not like those from the nobles’ area.
“Do you order and sell clothes, or do you make them yourself?” I asked Candelária.
“I make them. I don’t have many resources, but I do my best. I hope something pleases you,” answered Candelária.
It was clear she had talent. Some clothes had great designs and were made from good fabrics. With more resources, she could certainly make even better things.
“I liked some things, I’ll buy them.”
Margarida was speechless hearing me say that, while Candelária smiled broadly.
“You filthy woman, tell me if this establishment has a bathroom or not!” said Margarida furiously and desperately.
It seemed she had reached her limit and couldn’t hold it for another minute or two. But desperation often reveals who you really are, because speaking that way to someone treating us kindly is deplorable.
Candelária still didn’t know how to react.
“Answer me now!” said Margarida.
Candelária was about to respond, but I interrupted.
“Candelária won’t say anything until you ask politely. And if you do, Candelária, I’ll cancel my purchase,” I said.
Candelária became even more hesitant. Margarida glared at me furiously, but that was entirely her nature. She then took a breath.
“Miss, could you please tell me where the bathroom of this establishment is?” said Margarida.
“The bathroom is upstairs,” said Candelária.
Princess Margarida then removed her hands from her dress and began to run. Suddenly, she stopped at the first step of the stairs.
She probably couldn’t hold it anymore.
“Hey princess, what happened?” I asked.
She stayed silent for a few seconds.
“I ended up doing it in my clothes,” Margarida replied.
I then explained the situation to the shopkeeper.
“Candelária, could you get the best outfit here and dress her in it?” I asked.
“But wouldn’t that be a problem since she’s used to noble clothing?” asked Candelária.
Margarida then screamed.
“What do you mean, me wearing commoners’ clothes?!” asked Margarida.
“Princess Margarida, at this moment, you’re not in a position to think about such things, unless you’d rather stay in that soaked dress. We may not see it, but we can smell it,” I replied.
She remained silent for a while, but then quietly agreed. Candelária went upstairs with some clothes along with Margarida, who was still on the first step.
Minutes later, they came down. I could hardly believe the wonderful sight before me and even smiled. Margarida was dressed in commoners’ clothes.
Now we move on to the second step of educating Princess Margarida.
