Chapter 12:
From High School Senior - To Fantasy Card Game Slayer
The rain poured down as Kimi and Kana commanded their respective areas of the now combined fortresses and armory defensive complex. As thunder crashed and raged, and rain poured - Kana stood on the battlements with her Common Folk, all of them of the Sorcerer and Sorceress varieties, looked out from their positions at the marauding force approaching them, while on the slightly higher walls of Kimi’s fortress, she and her Common Folk of the Slayer variety, also looked onwards in steely eyed preparation, though this was merely a cover for the nerves that Kimi felt, while Kana was far more calm.
“On my signal, unleash a hail of light magic.”
Kana said to her Common Folk who all nodded, preparing as best they could, light emanating from each of their respective hands. Though they didn’t have nearly the magical capacity that their Sorceress Queen did - they were still formidable in numbers.
“If Kana’s defensive line should fall - then we’ll meet them with our blades like falling Sakura blossoms in a windstorm.”
Kimi said to her Common Folk, allowing herself to feel nervous and scared - but not to show it, nor to let those feelings, as valid as they were, to slow her down in the face of battle and in the coming onslaught of combat.
“Torch bearers and sappers - hold your positions in the rear until we’ve made it to the two walls.”
Riku commanded as he matched with his tight and sewn rag wearing Common Folk - with auras of dark magic coming over all of them. They didn’t know what his plans were for at least a number of them, plans that he’d decided on after his darkly-enchanted grimoire and his selection of Sorcerers and Slayers cards “persuaded him”, so to speak. They continued to march, trudging along with an orderly rumble as they collective footsteps splashed the mud and wet snow.
“Unleash your light magic!”
Kana called out as her Common Folk began to hurl palm sized balls of light down on the marauding forces of darkness - the ones who were hit with light then turning into flashes of light, and this being returned to the other world, back to Japan - their memories of this realm wiped away.
“Go forth - let the darkness reign and consume the light as it will make it scream!”
Riku cackled as he then pulled out a card, and with a slashing motion, activated it:
Venom of Unholy Evil - Effect: Allows for the Common Folk under the Sorcerer King to be turned into venom-fueled berserkers who won’t stop an attack until vanquished.
What then ensured was that the eyes of the first five ranks of his Common Folk, as well as their veins - glowed a vibrant neon purple and black, as they surged forward, throwing darkness magic with reckless abandon at Kana’s Common Folk, with small groups of them turning into flashes of light, and thus being returned back to the other world, and thus back to Japan!
“Torch bearers and sappers - sally forth!”
Riku commanded, with these Common Folk being enchanted by the effect of the Sorcerers and Slayers card too! Each of them in an “every other” pattern in the formation carried either a tall, thin, black, iron conical torch with the top quarter of the torch having a cage-like texture instead of the solid metal with no openings of the lower three quarters, thereby allowing one to see the flames. Those Common Folk carrying the bombs - carried what were thickly and conically-spiked iron balls with short fuses on them.
“Don’t let them reach the walls! If they reach the walls - then they’ll breach the walls!”
Kana yelled out to her Common Folk as they desperate tried to hold back Riku’s torch bearers and sappers - all while the thunderstorm raged and the rain poured.
“Stand at the ready and show no fear, we need to be ready for anything!”
Kimi said to her Common Folk with yet another attempt at a brave face, befits she looked at them again as they manned the walls, with the moat of enchanted fire raging below them.
“I’m scared - yes - I’m scared too. And it’s ok to be scared, but we can’t show our fear, not now.”
Kimi added, opening up as get Common Folk nodded. As she poked behind her, she saw more of her Common Folk working tirelessly in the armory. With an orderly line of identical shield and sword wielding Common Folk on the densely-bladed defensive walls and more in the armory, they were as ready as they could be.
“Hold them back! Hold the line!”
Kana yelled as she joined the fight, throwing ouch larger masses of light at Riku’s forces. Despite their valiant effort, they could soon see that fate was not on their side!
“BRACE FOR IMPACT!”
Kana yelled, seeing that through it all, about ten or so torch bearers and an equal number of sappers made it to her fortress’ walls, as the sappers planted the spiked iron bombs against the front-facing fortress wall, while the torch bearers lit the fuses! Despite the fact that they were soon turned into flashes of light by Kana’s Common Folk - it was too late.
“BOOM!”
That was the sound that echoed for nearly an entire minute as the walls of Kana’s fortress began to crumble where the explosions had happened! Yet these breaches were too small for all of Riku’s forces to advance through.
All the same, the battle had only just begun!
