Chapter 10:
Swim!
"It's cool, right?" Finn commented out loud.
"Yes." Marina was still looking at the island beneath them.
"This is amazing! The albatross looks epic, and we're flying, and... Okay, I know we were in the air the whole time, but you know what I mean."
"Ha ha yes, I do." Finn giggled.
"No matter how many times I see it, it's still amazing. Back on the island you don't really feel it. We are aware that it's in the air, but people got used to it, and honestly, it feels like walking on regular land too. You only become aware if you look down at the sea... And then you realize how far it really is." The boy appreciated the view in front of them.
"That's true." Marina agreed.
"Sooo, mister boss, what's the funny story behind the company's name?"
"Please don't call me like that." Finn was red again.
"But umm, it's not that funny, just a bit."
"Aha, I'm listening."
The boy was quiet for a moment before answering.
"Well, I don't remember it exactly how it went because I was a kid back then, so I only know the full story from my mom, and she tends to go overboard, so I can't guarantee the accuracy." He said.
Marina was laughing.
"But it happened when I was five. Back when my mom hadn't opened the company yet but she was really close, she had so many drafts for logos with different names, but nothing seemed to her liking. As she would say, it needs to click for me; if it isn't clicking, that's not it. And so one day while I stayed at home because I caught a cold, and while my mom was nervously walking around the house, looking at the drafts, I was drawing at the desk. Back then I couldn't understand what she was doing, and I remember how, because I saw my mom do it, I thought all adults walked around like that. I thought it was an adult thing and that when I grew up, I'd understand it. And so I grabbed my drawings and started walking like my mom. Now I feel pain every time she mentions it, but I have to admit, it is funny, and I don't know what little me was thinking back then, but I'm sure he felt cool in the moment. Both Finn and Marina laughed.
"And so while I was impersonating my mom, I remember she turned around and saw me. Now I don't remember the exact expression that she had on her face, probably confusion, but I do remember that my papers fell on the floor. She said that I panicked and started picking them up right away. I guess little me thought that you need your papers to look professional while walking like an adult. And so my mom picked up my drawings from the floor. She said that I looked upset, like someone stole my favorite toy or something. She looked at the drawings and said, "Wow, Finn, did you draw this? It's beautiful... considering your age."
"Ahh yes, the famous parents' compliment." Marina commented while still giggling.
"Yup, but then suddenly she looked at it more intensely, and there were bird drawings. So my mom was staring at the kindergarten-level bird drawings so seriously, like they were documents. There was a bird with a big golden feather on its head on one of the drawings. It's clicking! She yelled. And that's basically how it got a name. It was that one golden feather that stuck out. My mom said, "I want for my albatrosses to stick out from the rest just like this feather." Finn giggled.
"Aww, that's so cute." Marina smiled.
"Heh, I guess." Finn's cheeks were still red.
"There you are." Camellia flew down.
"There are so many people; I barely spotted you." Fairy stopped to catch some air after flying around in a hurry.
"I guess everyone wants to try out the pool?" That was Marina's first thought.
"Huh, I doubt it," Finn replied.
"I don't know how it is on your world, but people here see swimming only as an aesthetic; they are not serious about it." The boy spoke with disappointment in his voice.
"Well, it's true that people on Earth swim normally, but I'd be lying if I said there weren't those who go to the beach just to show off their swimsuits and look around to see how others saw them. Especially people my age. I don't care about that, but it's true that I'd be considered lazy back home when it comes to swimming." Marina explained.
"You lazy? People from Earth are too harsh." Finn commented.
"Ha ha," Marina laughed.
"Yup, they sometimes are, but sometimes they are right too."
Marina was thinking about her parents.
"But it sounds to me like people here act like influencers; watch my day at the pool."
"I don't know what you exactly mean by influencer, but yes, those people usually have influence in the society, so showing off is really important to them. It's like their food. " Both Finn and Marina laughed.
"Alright, you two, focus. What's our plan?" Camellia said.
"Oh, come on, Camellia, you have to admit that it's funny. Plus, you are the first to criticize them with me; it's our favorite afternoon activity every summer in the Little Falcon." Finn smirked.
"True, but we need to figure out a plan for using the pool. We both know you never get up early, and you heard what your mom said."
"Ahhh... True. But I will try my best; I have to!" Finn had determination in his eyes.
"And we will go to bed earlier." The fairy raised an eyebrow.
"Ffffine." Finn wasn't happy about that decision.
"Okay, night owl, sacrifices are needed to accomplish our goal." The fairy teased the boy.
"I know," he replied.
"Well... I'm not exactly a morning person either, so I agree." Marina admitted.
"Alright, let's meet up earlier then so we can have more time for research." Camellia suggested.
"Hmm, how about at six o'clock?" She asked.
"Sounds good."
"Okay."
Both Marina and Finn said.
Later that same afternoon, the three of them gathered in the fairy's cabin.
"Finn, didn't we say let's meet at six, and you said okay?" Camellia crossed her arms.
"Well, it's six." He nervously replied.
"It's six fifteen!"
"But I just couldn't resist the dessert after dinner. They were serving lavender pudding. I rushed here as soon as I ate it." Finn tried to defend himself.
"Besides, the only reason why they gave us dinner earlier was because I asked nicely. Otherwise we would have to wait until six like other guests."
"It makes sense that you are the one who asked since you know the staff."
"Hey, it still counts."
"Okay, true," Camellia admitted.
I carried and ate my pudding in the cabin.
Marina thought in her head while the two of them were talking.
"You are lucky we didn't wait for you and that I already found something useful."
Fairy added.
"Oh, what did you find?" Finn was curious.
"Well now I can finally say. Was waiting for you so I don't have to repeat it again."
"Oops, sorry." Finn awkwardly replied.
"Ahm, anyways, I think we found our first clue. Here it says how the abilities of the bracelet depend on who is wearing it.
For example, if the mermaid has it, the bracelet will give a boost to their magic, but if a human were wearing it, the bracelet would give that person the same abilities that the mermaid has." Camellia was reading the book.
"So what exactly are those abilities?" Marina asked.
"Right. It says that mermaids can clean the sea, talk to sea creatures, teleport, and manipulate water. "
"Cool." Finn commented out loud.
"Yes, that sounds awesome." Marina agreed.
"Oh, and it also says how long ago the mermaids used to give bracelets to humans they considered as friends."
"Like friendship bracelets," Marina said.
"Yes, and mermaids would invite those humans to their kingdom. The bracelet would give them the ability to breathe underwater." Camellia read further.
"Breathing underwater? Is that for real?" Marina was wondering.
"Well, there is only one way to find out."
Camellia said.
The three of them looked at the mermaid's bracelet.
