Chapter 11:
Swim!
The next morning, our early birds, while still yawning, were at the pool.
"Alright, time to put this bracelet to the test." Marina said.
"Ummm guys, don't tell me you're entering the pool in that." She addressed the fact that both Camellia and Finn were still fully dressed.
"Oh, I don't plan to swim. Don't want to soak my wings, but I'm here as your support." The fairy replied.
"I... I would like to, but, umm, can I swim in my clothes instead? I really don't want you to see me in that." Finn said.
"That?" Marina was confused.
"Ahhh... My swimming outfit. If we can even call it like that. Your swimming-
"Swimsuit."
"Yes, your swimsuit is beautiful, but swimming clothing on our world is utterly hideous!" Finn was being dramatic.
"Oh come on, it can't be that bad. Let me see." Marina was curious.
"No way."
"Come on."
"Fff-fine." Finn pulled out the piece of clothing from the orange bag.
It was a long, gray, weird-looking piece of clothing that resembled more a diving suit than a swimming one.
"What in the name of fashion is that thing?!" Marina was trying to hold her laughter.
"Told you." Finn quickly returned it in the bag.
"Wait, people here really wear those for swimming. For a pool?" Marina started laughing.
"Yup. Believe me, I'm not happy about it in the slightest." Finn replied.
"I can tell." Marina chuckled.
"This just won't do. You have to have epic swimsuits for the pool party. We have to enter there in style." Marina spoke with enthusiasm in her voice.
"To wear what you wear?" Camellia asked.
"I mean, if you want to," Marina said.
"Well, it does look pretty." Fairy commented.
"Thanks." Our girl from Earth smiled.
"Please tell me men don't wear that." Finn had a worried expression on his face.
"Ha ha, of course not." Marina laughed.
"Phew. What do they wear then?" The boy sounded curious.
"Well, mostly just swimming short."
"Cool."
"So what do you say?" Marina looked at both of them.
"I'm in," Finn said.
"Well, it sounds fun, but there's one problem: we don't have swimsuits like those here." Camellia stated.
"We can make them," Marina suggested.
"Huh? But how?" The fairy was confused.
"From the material of these umm swimming clothes and with your magic too, I guess." Marina was hoping for Camellia to say yes.
"Hmm, well, I could try." The fairy said.
"Yes! We won't look ugly at the party!" Finn sounded happy.
"Ahm, alright, let's focus on the bracelet now." Camellia pointed at the pool.
"Okay, let's see." Marina said as she was entering the pool. She swam for a bit before diving.
I'm so afraid to breathe; what if it doesn't work?
Marina was worried.
I know, I'll immediately go up if it doesn't. Ughh, here goes nothing, I guess. Please work!
Marina closed her eyes and tried to breathe. She was standing like that for a moment before opening her eyes.
Huh? I feel weird but also normal at the same time; I can't describe it. Wait, it worked?! I can breathe underwater. I feel like a mermaid.
Marina was diving in the pool.
"Marina!" She could hear Camellia and Finn calling her.
Marina emerged to the surface.
"Oh finally. We were worried about you." Camellia said.
"Yeah, we were calling you for a whole minute." Finn added.
"Oops. "But guess what, it works!" Marina was happy.
"Really? I mean, I knew it would work... most likely." Camellia commented.
"Wow." Finn was impressed.
"Okay, time to see what else this bracelet can do." Camellia opened her book.
And so the three of them were doing research, waking up early to go to the pool, until the day of the party.
Two hours before the pool party, all three of them were in Marina's cabin.
"Aghh, we were so caught up in the research that we forgot about the swimsuits." Marina looked disappointed.
"Well, we found out valuable information, like the spell to locate the mermaid kingdom through the bracelet." Camellia said.
"That's true." Marina agreed.
"And, I actually gave it a try."
"Huh?"
"I was curious and wanted to see how it'd look, so I hope it turned out okay. I used your swimsuit as an example." Camellia levitated the swimsuits that she made for herself and swimming trunks for Finn.
"So what do you think?" Camellia asked for feedback.
"Wow, you are good." Marina was impressed.
"Thank you, Camellia, you're the best." Finn was happy.
"I know." The fairy smiled.
Two hours later, our squad, fabulously dressed for the occasion, arrived at the party.
They were wearing a lightweight jacket that resembled a beach coat.
The area was already crowded, and yes, everyone at the pool was wearing odd swimming clothes. Finn's mother was talking to the guests.
"Now let's hope I don't see anyone from my school." Finn commented.
"Why, are they not your friends?" Marina asked.
"Nope, and trust me, you don't want to meet them."
"They are not that bad." Camellia tried to sound nice.
"Aha." Finn raised his eyebrow.
"I only saw them for a short while, so I can't properly judge, but yes, they are a little bit b-
"Boring, yes," Finn said.
"Ohh, so they are the boring people your mom mentioned. Your classmates. Oof, what a bummer." Marina commented.
"Yes, so if I see anyone, let's just avoid them and—"
"Oh, hi, Finn." Someone greeted the boy.
Oh no.
Finn really didn't want to turn around.
"Hi Vesper," he replied.
"I didn't think I'd see you here." The girl in fancy clothes said with a sour expression on her face. She was accompanied by two other girls and three guys.
"Well, it was a last-minute decision." Finn sounded awkward.
"Ah, makes sense. I know you usually don't go to parties, so at first I thought it was someone who just looks similar, but no, it was actually you."
"Yeah." The boy didn't know what else to say.
"Okay, we're going to the bar now. Wanna come?" The girl asked.
"No thanks, I'm with my friends. We were just headed to the pool."
"Ahh, okay. Hi Finn's friends, bye Finn." The girl said and left along with her group.
"Well, that was awkward." Marina commented.
"I know. Told you." Finn said.
"Okay, let's go to the pool. I see it's free too since no one is actually swimming." Marina pointed out.
"Yup." Finn wasn't surprised by that fact.
The three of them took off their lightweight jackets. Suddenly everyone was staring at them. People were surprised by their unique outfits.
The moment was soon interrupted by the loud noise in the air.
"What was that?" Marina asked.
"I have no idea, but it came from above." Finn said.
"Look! Someone is falling down!" Camellia yelled.
