Chapter 16:
The Female Leads Have Eyes For Only Me
Frank threw two pillows at the werewolves.
It wasn’t going to do any damage, but it didn’t need to.
Slashing through the pillow with ease, a storm of feathers assaulted the werewolves' faces. The two raised their hands to protect themselves.
It gave Frank the opportunity to run back and create some distance between them.
“Nice, Frank!” I yelled.
This is it! The perfect timing!
Holding onto the doorknob, I raised my arm and threw it as hard as I could against the bedroom window.
Glass shattered and spilled onto the floor.
“Let’s get out of here!”
“Right!” Mia yelled.
She ran to pick her mom up and lead her through the window first.
Of course, the werewolves weren’t going to let us free that easily.
The two charged towards us.
“Like hell am I gonna let you mutts get to us!” Frank yelled.
Using his fishing rod, he reeled something over the werewolves.
My eyes widened.
It was the bedsheet!
It covered their heads for a moment until the werewolves clawed through it.
But by the time they got the bedsheet off, the four of us were already out the window.

We ran down the dark and narrow alleyway. The alleyway was cramped. Smoke lingered in the air, along with the metallic smell of blood.
People continued to scream. And the creatures continued to roar.
“Come on! Come on! Come on! Let’s go!” Frank yelled.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“To the Guild Tavern! There must be people over there!”
That’s reasonable.
We kept on running.
The end of the alleyway onto an open street was only 20 feet away.
And that was when I heard their barks.
Not far behind us were the sound of running—no—sprinting stomps of the two werewolves!
They ran on all fours.
And they were gaining on us.
Fast.
“H-hey, Frank! They're going to catch up!”
And if they did, Frank would be the first to get caught.
He clicked his tongue and dropped his fishing rod.
“Just keep running!”
I kept on sprinting.
“Right!”
The alley was too narrow for us to dodge any of the werewolves' attacks. And there wasn’t any way for us to fight back!
I clenched my teeth.
Run faster, Tai. Run faster!
The werewolves were closing in on Frank, scraping the stone-cold floor with their mighty claws and fearsome growls.
The open street was just ahead of us!
“I made it!” Maya yelled.
Mia was the next to make it out.
Then me.
“Dad!” Mia yelled.
The werewolf behind Frank raised its hand, its claws ready to cut him to pieces.
Maya and I threw rocks at the thing, doing anything we could to distract it, but the rocks bounced off its face and chest, doing nothing to stop its attack.
“No!” Maya screamed.
She ran towards Frank.
“Mom, no!” Mia screamed, her arm outstretched.
Don’t tell me she’s going to sacrifice herself for Frank?!
No. It won’t work. If she tries to protect him, they’ll both die!
“Stop! Don’t do it!” I yelled.
Our words didn’t register with Maya. She kept running towards her husband and pushed him away.
The werewolf was now in arm's length and swung down on both Maya and Frank.
“Nooooo!!!” Mia cried.
Everything was moving so slowly, as if time was stopping.
Even with how slow everything was slow, I couldn’t move.
My feet were glued to the ground beneath me and I could only watch in horror as the werewolf’s claws got closer and closer to Mia’s parents.
But that’s when it happened.
“Earth Barrier!”
“Hrngh?!”
A wall of stone shot up, causing the werewolf to slash through it and protecting Maya and Frank.
“An earth spell?!” I spat out.
Mia took a weak step back and smiled.
“Yeah,” she said. “And the girl who cast it. I know that voice from anywhere!”
To our right were our two-party members running towards us wearing their nightclothes but equipped with their usual weapons.
“Ophelia!” Mia cried. “Thank you!”
Ophelia smiled.
“I-it’s no problem,” she said.
