Chapter 31:

Learning the hard way.

The wrong way to use magic in another world.

We closely followed Alejandro. He left town, and just outside, he spotted one of those tiny earth elementals that often came down from the nearby mountains.

He walked very fast, ready to attack it from behind.
He didn't even know that these earth elementals had no eyes and that they sensed the mana coming from living beings to determine their position. There was no way to perform a surprise attack on them.

Alejandro got close enough to attack, but when he swung his sword, the enemy dodged and then punched him in the back.
It was the exact same thing that had happened to me when I fought one of these things.
Alejandro then turned around and rushed forward. He missed his target with his sword but immediately tried to stab the enemy with his dagger... and he succeeded. Unfortunately for him, stabbing an earth elemental with a dagger is absolutely pointless.
The enemy didn't take any damage and then... kicked Alejandro in the groin. Ouch.

Alejandro was now on the ground, barely trying to move.
The pain was probably both physical and psychological.

Leonel: Astra, can you heal him? I feel bad for him.

Astra: Don't worry, Leo. He didn't take any actual damage, it's just pain. A lot of pain. But no damage.

I tried to talk to Alejandro again.

Leonel: Alejandro, now you see how it is. We are weak in this world. You can't defeat anyone with a simple bladed weapon.

Alejandro: If I can't even defeat a tiny creature, then I don't even deserve to live. Just let me die...

Leonel: Are you sure you want to die? There is something you need to do first...

Alejandro: What are you talking about?

Leonel: Do you remember that shining red crystal that was hovering over Mateo's ashes? The crystal that the bald bastard took with him.

Alejandro: Yeah... Where did Mateo get that crystal? And why did the bald bastard grab it?

Leonel: That's... the... crystallized form of Mateo's soul...

Alejandro: ...what... are you... saying...?

Leonel: He needs five crystallized souls of people from our world to perform an inverse summoning ritual to travel back to our world.

Alejandro: That crystal... Mateo's soul is trapped in it?

Leonel: As long as Mateo's soul is trapped inside that crystal, he will never be able to rest in peace...

Alejandro: Then... if we smash that crystal, Mateo's soul will be free?

Leonel: That's probably the case. But first, we need to defeat the bald bastard.

Astra: Leo has prepared a lot of weapons from your world. I know this because I helped craft them. It might be possible to win.

Alejandro: Did you craft a revolver or some other kind of gun?

Leonel: No, that's not going to be possible. But we have a bunch of other things. I will explain my plan once we reunite with the girls in town.

Alejandro: Unless you have a bulletproof vest, I don't think you can do anything. And if we don't have a gun on our side, we can't land the first hit.

Leonel: Don't worry. I can assure you that we can do it as long as we follow the plan. In fact, your ability is an important part of this plan.

Alejandro: MY ability!? You know I have a useless ability, don't you? All I can do is create tiny mana creatures; they are weak and useless, and they don't even move on their own. I have to control them myself.

Leonel: That's more than enough. I can assure you that those mana creatures will be very useful.

Alejandro: Well, you better make sure your plan works. I don't care if I die, but at the very least, I want to smash those red crystals.

Leonel: Speaking of crystals, we will also need to be prepared in case he throws some blue crystals at us. That's how he summons the nara, and there is no way to know what's going to come out of them.

Astra: In a way, that's the biggest problem. An unknown variable is always a bad thing.

Leonel: If possible, we will have Faylinn deal with the nara. And if she can't defeat them, then she will just have to lure them away from us.

Alejandro: The nara are slow, aren't they? Can't we just ignore them in combat?

Astra: Not all nara are slow. It depends on the kind of creature that was turned into a nara. Some of them can be really fast.

Alejandro: Then are you sure this "Faylinn" will be able to handle them?

Astra: If it's a small, humanoid-type nara, then she will probably be fine.

Leonel: Everybody will have a role in this plan, except for Maria and Gabriela, since they are opposed to violence. You, Alejandro, and Xiomara, will have your own duties assigned.

Astra: I'm sorry to interrupt you, but it seems we've got company.

Leonel: What!? Where!?

Astra: Up there. Astra pointed at a point far away in the sky.

I couldn't see much, but I did see a black thing in the sky.

Leonel: Could that be... a flying nara!?

Astra: That seems to be the case, and judging by its shape, it's probably a gargoyle.

Leonel: Aren't they made of stone or something like that? Do they have a weakness? I asked in a hurry.

Astra: Destroy the head and it will stop moving.

Alejandro: What should we do? I bet my sword is not gonna be useful against it.

Astra: I will lure it, and when it attacks me, I will try to grab it and hold it in place.

Leonel: So, is there anything we can use to destroy its head?

Astra: Unlike the earth elementals, these gargoyles used to be creatures of flesh and bones. Once they became petrified, cracks appeared all over their bodies, exposing the flesh. Aim at the cracks on its neck with a sword or dagger and make sure you destroy its neck from the inside.

Leonel: Alejandro, get ready!

Alejandro: Ok!

We prepared ourselves to deal with this weird creature.
I was wielding my magic dagger, while Alejandro was wielding a dagger and a short sword.
This time, defeating the enemy wouldn't be impossible as long as Astra managed to hold it in place.
We just had to wait a few more seconds for the flying creature to arrive...
