Chapter 18:
Swim!
"Huh?!" Camellia, Marina, and Finn were surprised by Tyson's reply.
"You really want to go with us? Aren't you afraid of the sea too?" Marina asked.
"Believe me, I am. It's the same sea that mercilessly swallowed our kingdom and the rest of the land from the world. It's exactly why you guys sound crazy when you say you want to go there despite knowing that, but I can appreciate the determination to follow your goals even if the whole world tells you not to do it. Besides, it's not like I have anything better to do anyways. I ran away from home after having yet another dumb fight with my family... I just need a break before I decide to go back." Tyson said.
"Oh, it's nothing serious though. I just really don't want to go back right away after everything I said. Ughh, it was so embarrassing."
"It can't be that bad." Finn tried to cheer him up.
"Ohh, but it is. I said I'd rather pull the land back from the sea with my bare hands than live another day under the same roof with them, and when they said, "Oh, then do it," I said I would and that I'd build my own kingdom on the new land. I said all that in anger, and when I finally had time to cool down, I couldn't stop thinking about what I said and imagining their faces when I come back." Tyson explained.
"Oh look, Finn, you found another crazy head." Camellia chuckled.
"Camellia." Finn felt embarrassed.
"Ahm, I don't think it's crazy to believe there is still hope to find land. And if it's considered crazy, well, I don't care." He said to Tyson.
"Let's find the land together!" He added.
Upon hearing this, Tyson burst into laughter.
"Oh, I didn't know I needed to hear this. Now I definitely feel better, so thanks." Tyson was still giggling.
"I didn't really do anything, though." Finn replied with a slightly confused look on his face.
"You said the words I thought no one in this whole world would dare to say, and that's enough for me to know that no matter what I feel like, if I follow you guys, my summer won't be wasted." Tyson said while looking at them.
"Well, I definitely still have a few questions that I'd like to ask you." Camellia commented.
"Ask whenever you want," he said.
"It'll be cool to have another helping hand." Marina added.
"True. Welcome aboard... No pun intended." Finn said to Tyson.
"Thanks." Tyson chuckled.
The remaining four days have passed, and Albatross finally reached New Alison.
Miss Cherry called the guards right away, and they immediately took into custody the thieves. Captain of the other albatross under the name of Red Rock, came to Miss Cherry to shook hands and express his gratitude for saving them as well.
After all of that was over, Miss Cherry turned to Finn and the others to say goodbye before going.
"Alright kids, the albatross takes off in a few hours; remember to keep your brooch until you return. Yes, you can still use the pool, but the same rules apply. I'll repeat them since Tyson is new."
"Mom, you really don't have to; we can tell him." Finn said.
"Ohh, but you can forget; I know how you kids are. It's my responsibility to warn. "Ahm, so if you want to use the pool, please do so only in the morning hours from six to nine in the morning." Miss Cherry said to Tyson.
"Of course, and thank you." He replied.
They all waved at Finn's mother from the albatross.
A few hours later, the flying ship took off again.
The next day at seven o'clock, four of them were at the pool. Finn and Marina were swimming, while Tyson and Camellia were talking.
"You're not going to swim?" Fairy asked the boy.
"No thanks. Fire and water aren't exactly the best combination. I mean, I know how to swim well enough to survive at least if someone throws me into the sea, ha ha." Tyson laughed sarcastically.
"Aha. So there is actually something that I wanted to ask you as soon as that fight happened."
"Spill it."
"Well, I'm really curious—how can you use the fairy magic?"
"Oh, that."
"Yes. I know it's not witch magic; believe me, I can feel the difference, and there is no doubt you are a Plamenian, and I don't mean it in a bad way. Your abilities are very impressive, and you have good control too." Camellia complimented Tyson.
"You know what, you are the weirdest fairy I've ever met, and I also don't mean it in a bad way." Tyson replied.
"Oh really?" Camellia giggled.
"Yup. I mean, other fairies wouldn't want to talk to us unless it was to mock us or to provoke us to start a fight and then pretend to be victims."
"Ughh, unfortunately I've heard about few cases. I would lie if I said the past doesn't matter to me, but I don't encourage that kind of behavior."
"Yeah, I don't agree with what our people did either, but who am I to complain? They always call me names if I ever dare to say something to them. But it doesn't matter... After all, I don't belong anywhere." Tyson had a sad look in his eyes again.
While they were talking, Marina and Finn were jumping in the pool and having fun.
"Ahh, it's been a while since I properly jumped." Marina commented.
"I'll be honest, I've never tried it before. Thanks for telling me. It's so fun." Finn said out loud.
"No problem." Marina smiled.
"So, Mister Powerful, you were pretty strong and amazing out there, but I have to say, your math is terrible. That was way more than fourteen gems."
"I... I'm sorry I lied to you." Finn felt bad.
"I wanted to tell you the truth, but I hesitated again and said out of habit what I say to everyone. And you're not like them; I'm so sorry for that."
"Hey, it's okay, really it is. I just don't get it. Why would you lie about something so amazing?" Marina wondered.
"Well, you see, my classmates wouldn't really call it as amazing." Finn replied.
"But I thought that was a big deal in this world, well, at least for humans."
"Yes, you are right, it is a big deal. I was never obsessed with the number for the purpose of hitting a record or being accepted into popular groups. I wasn't even interested in gems prior to like third grade of elementary school. I was always interested in endless possibilities. What draws me to gems is the mystery and unanswered questions about them. Why only four abilities if there are so many gems? Can we discover more? What if we combine them? I love to explore and search for the unknown."
"I see; that's why you are so drawn to the sea too."
"Yes, exactly." Finn looked happy.
"But you see, schools would always pressure my mom to sign me up for university ever since they realised I could use more than the expected for kids my age. I constantly felt that pressure too, and I didn't like it one bit. I like gems don't get me wrong and studying them sounds fun but I want to be able to decide my future university in peace without constant pressure and expectations from others. There are other things that I like too."
"Ahh, I get it. Back home, I get constant questions about my future too. I know I should have some ideas and be responsible. I feel like I'm running out of time if I don't decide soon, but I'm only eighteen; how can I know what's the best answer for my future? I don't even know myself yet in the present; how can I decide about my future?" Marina sounded nervous.
"Heh, true." Finn smiled.
"Remember that girl we met at the pool before the attack?"
"Oh yeah, that annoying fancy girl."
"Yup,she and her group always give me a hard time at school. They always act like they are the top of the school and won't talk to people or accept them them into their friend group if they can't use enough gems, but the truth is, if you are as strong as them or stronger, stronger, they won't accept you either because Vesper wants to be the best, best, and anyone who dares to know more than her is a threat."
"Ohh, now I get it." Marina said.
Suddenly her bracelet glowed.
"Huh?!" Both Marina and Finn looked surprised.
"Did you see that?" She said.
"Yes, let's show it to Camellia." Finn replied.
They got out of the pool and rushed to where Tyson and Camellia were.
"Camellia, look, the mermaid's bracelet is glowing!" Marina spoke out loud.
