Chapter 19:
Swim!
"Let me see," Camellia said.
"Hmm, the bracelet seems as if it's reacting to something... or someone. The book mentioned it could react to another mermaid." The fairy explained.
"So what you're saying is that another mermaid could be nearby?" Marina asked.
"I'm not sure, but it could be." Camellia wasn't certain.
"We should check."
"Wait, Marina. First we need a plan. Yes, the mermaid could be near, but that's not near enough if you consider how high in the air we are currently. She could be in the sea right below us, but that's still pretty far away. We can't rush in without a plan."
"Ahh, you're right." Marina agreed.
"Don't worry, we will go to check."
"Really?"
"Yes. Just give me a minute. Let's see."
Camellia looked around.
"Well, for starters, you and Finn go take a shower, and take these towels with you too." Camellia gave them two white towels that she pulled from her bag.
"Thanks," Marina said.
"I'll figure out a plan in the meantime." Fairy said.
While they were taking the shower, Camellia took the book and started turning the pages.
"What are you looking for?" Tyson asked.
"I'm searching for the advice on magic combinations and for the location spell again." Fairy was quickly reading.
"Ahh, I see," he said.
After a shower and change of clothes, Marina and Finn left their swimsuits to dry and rushed back.
"Okay, I got it." Camellia sounded happy.
"Ahm, so, Finn and Tyson, go grab a flying emergency lifeboat and make sure no one sees you. Marina, you go grab some food and water from the dining area; it's still breakfast time, so it won't look suspicious. And I have just one question before we do this: does anyone know how to drive a flying ship? Minus Marina, of course." Camellia looked at the boys.
"Umm, nope," Tyson replied.
"Well, I tried it a few times but not too far away or completely on my own, but there is a first time for everything." Finn tried to sound reassuring.
Wow, Camellia is so well organized.
Marina was impressed.
"Good enough. In an emergency case we'll use autopilot to get us back on Albatross. Also, we won't stay in the sea for too long. Fifteen minutes is the limit. If we stay longer, it'll be harder to return to Albatross, and then we'll be stuck in the middle of the open sea, and no one wants that. So for this plan to work we must follow this plan and stick to it. Now go get that puffin!"
"Right away, lady." Tyson smirked.
The boys left.
"Puffin?" Marina asked with curiosity in her voice.
"Oh, that's the name of the emergency lifeboat. It can still fly, but it can also work as a regular boat, which is perfect for our case. Camellia explained to Marina.
"Ohh, okay. Puffin sounds cute." Marina smiled.
"Yes, it kind of does." Camellia agreed.
"Okay, I'll go grab that food now." Marina added.
Half an hour later, Tyson, Finn, and Marina returned. Marina brought the food and drinks, but the boys returned empty-handed.
"Before you say anything, I have to say, yes, we did find the puffin, but we can't just grab it. There is a high risk of getting seen, especially by the other passengers. Remember what my mom said: after breakfast we can't use the pool exactly for the reason of passengers appearing on the deck at that time. The only way to get one is by sneaking and becoming invisible." Finn looked at Camellia.
"So that's where I get in." Fairy smirked.
"Alright, let's do this." She said.
The four of them moved carefully, trying their best not to be seen by anyone on the deck, which wasn't easy considering all the passengers and crew members that were present there.
When they finally came closer, Camellia used an invisibility spell on both the puffin and them.
They all rushed in as quickly as possible.
"Alright, Finn, now it all depends on you. I can't use any other spells while I'm focusing on making us invisible, so until we reach the sea, you'll have to concentrate and give it your best." Camellia said to Finn.
"I know." The boy replied.
"Alright, let's see." Finn looked at the helm with a gemstone right in the center of it.
Boy first calmed down and took a moment to collect his thoughts.
In the next moment Finn started helming the flying lifeboat, also known as a puffin in this world.
They flew away from the albatross without getting noticed.
"Bye-bye, Albatross." Marina commented.
"Yeah, let's just hope my mom doesn't find out about this, or I'll be punished for life." Finn was worried.
"Well, if this mission succeeds, I know I won't be there to defend you in case you get in trouble because you were helping me, but I will say this: I'm so thankful that I ran into you guys. I appreciate all that you're doing for me. And I know your mom is strict, but she loves you very much. I'm sure she will understand, but I also know that Camellia will have your back too." Marina smiled.
"Okay, that's true." Finn chuckled.
"I already came up with ten different defense arguments." The fairy smirked.
They all laughed out loud.
"By the way, how does this ship work? I was curious about that with albatross as well." Marina was wondering.
"Oh, it's powered by gemstones. The strongest ones that we have so far. Fun fact, all islands are powered by gems as well, but the difference is that islands are naturally powered, while with flying ships it was us humans who came up with that idea." Finn explained.
"Ohh, I see, cool." Marina sounded impressed.
"Alright, we're almost at the sea. Any signal from your bracelet?" The boy asked Marina.
"No." She looked at the mermaid bracelet.
"I made sure to fly directly below the albatross, but we did leave half an hour later, so if there was a mermaid before, maybe she left by now." Finn said.
"But that doesn't mean that she won't come back or that we won't catch another signal. Plus, as soon as we reach the sea, Camellia can use the location spell." He added.
A few minutes later the four of them reached the sea.
"I never thought I'd ever be this close to the sea." Tyson commented while looking at the sea around them.
"Well, I see it up close pretty much every week, but no matter how many times I see it, I never get bored of the view." Finn commented.
"Heh, I know." Camellia smiled.
"Well, in my world being on the sea is completely normal, but I think everyone from Earth would be terrified to witness this." Marina said.
Open sea everywhere and no land no matter how far you go. I got chills just by listening about it, but now when I'm actually here and aware that this is another world, being so close again... Makes me realize how real it is.
For a moment Marina was lost in her thoughts.
"Okay, I can do the location spell now." Camellia said.
Just as she was about to do it, the mermaid bracelet started glowing again.
"Wow, that was fast." Marina commented.
"Umm, that wasn't me." Camellia replied.
"The bracelet is acting on its own again." The fairy added.
"Does that mean... that the mermaid is nearby?" Marina asked while looking at the bracelet.
"There is only one way to find out." Fairy said.
A few minutes later, after Marina changed back into her swimsuit, she returned, ready to start swimming.
"Okay, I'll cast a telepathy spell; that way we will be able to keep contact while you are in the sea." Fairy explained.
"And I'll create a small barrier around you to protect you from any possible dangers." Finn pulled a gemstone from his pocket.
"Plus I'll create one around the puffin too." He added.
"Well, I'm not really sure if I'll be useful on the sea, but if any weird monster comes to the surface and attacks, I'll grill it." Tyson smirked.
"Thanks, guys." Marina smiled.
Okay, I can do this.
She stood quietly for a moment before diving into the sea.
It took Marina a moment to open her eyes.
"Oh, that's right, I can breathe underwater. I don't think I'll get used to it any time soon. And wait, I can talk underwater too? Awesome!" Marina was amazed.
"Okay, let's see... Hmmm..." She looked at the bracelet again.
"It's still glowing, but I don't see anyone."
She looked around, but there was no one except the little fishes swimming around.
Suddenly she heard a mysterious voice saying,
"You are not the mermaid queen."
What was that?
Marina got scared.
"Marina, is everything okay?" Camellia asked her through telepathy.
"I... I heard a strange voice, but I don't know where it is coming from."
"A voice? What was it saying?"
"Something about ummm... Oh, me not being the—
"But why do you feel like a mermaid queen?" A voice spoke again.
Marina turned around.
In the next moment a large sea creature appeared in front of Marina. It was a purple whale.
"Who are you then?" The whale asked Marina.
