Chapter 20:
Swim!
Marina was caught by surprise and didn't know how to react.
A giant purple whale was staring at her.
It's a... It's a whale?!
She was panicking.
"What?"
Camellia sounded just as surprised.
"Marina, are you okay? Tell us what's going on. What do you mean there is a whale?"
"It's exactly like I said; some purple whale appeared literally out of nowhere and is now staring at me. Well, at least now I know from where the voice came." Marina said to Camellia.
"Do you maybe know—
The signal was lost. Marina couldn't finish the sentence.
Aghhh, oh no! It's over!
The girl started dramatizing.
Okay, let's calm down. I have a barrier, and whales are friendly, right? They only eat plankton, well, at least on Earth. Sure, this whale is purple and it talks, but let's not jump to conclusions.
Marina was trying to remain calm.
"Umm, hello. Hi." Marina nervously waved at the whale.
Aghh, I don't know what I am doing!
She was panicking again.
"Hi." The whale responded.
It replied?
Marina was surprised.
And wow, Camellia's book was right. With this bracelet, I can talk to sea creatures.
She thought in her head.
"Are you the one who called me?" Marina asked the whale.
"I don't understand your question. I didn't call anyone, but perhaps you called me." The whale spoke in a soothing voice.
What? I don't get what it's trying to say.
Marina had a confused look on her face.
"It really is a mermaid bracelet!" Another voice spoke behind Marina.
She quickly turned around to see who that was. A mermaid with blue hair tied in a braided ponytail and yellow eyes was swimming towards Marina. The girl had little seashells all over her hair and two big seashells that were like an upper part of the swimsuit. She also had a beautiful long blue tail.
"It's okay, Kika, I don't feel any bad intentions from this girl." The mermaid spoke to the whale.
She turned to Marina and said,
"And you don't have to be afraid either. Kika was just being curious." Mermaid wanted to reassure Marina.
In the next moment the whale left.
"Okay, that was weird." Marina didn't even realize that she spoke out loud.
"Yeah, I can imagine that looking odd to humans, but Kika is friendly. She was probably drawn to you for the same reason I was. Your bracelet." Mermaid explained to Marina.
"So that was you. The bracelet reacted to you." Marina said.
"Hmm, could be." The girl was swimming around her.
"I'm Cecilia, by the way, and you?" This mermaid had a rather bubbly personality.
"I'm Marina."
"Ohh, cool name. So Marina, how did you end up in the sea?" Cecilia looked at her with curiosity in her eyes.
"I'm sorry if I talk too fast; it's just that we don't get many visitors from up there. Well, actually, we don't get any... You are the first human that I saw. So please excuse my curiosity." Mermaid spoke fast with excitement in her voice.
"Ohh, and where did you get that bracelet? Sorry, I didn't let you answer the first question, and I'm already talking again. Sorry."
"It's okay. Well, I was actually searching for the mermaid kingdom this whole time, and—
"Ohh, I know where it is! I mean, of course I know; I'm a mermaid. Ughh, that was so stupid. Oh no, I interrupted you again, sorry." "Mermaid," she nervously said.
"I appreciate the offer and, umm, your enthusiasm." Marina commented with an awkward expression on her face.
"I found this bracelet in the sea, but not your sea."
"Huh?" Cecilia looked confused but curious.
"You see, I'm actually from another world, and I found this bracelet while I was swimming. Swimming is actually normal in my world in case you were wondering about that. As soon as I touched the bracelet, though, it transported me to this other world, and ever since then I've been trying to find a mermaid kingdom because this very bracelet that got me caught up in all this is my only clue to return home." Marina was explaining.
I just said all of that at once; I don't know if she will believe me.
Marina was worried.
"You are from another world? Wow, that's so cool!" The mermaid was amazed.
"I guess it's my lucky day that the first human I met is from a completely different world. How epic is that?" The mermaid was commenting while swimming around.
"So Cecilia, does this bracelet really belong to the mermaid queen? The purple whale said the same thing."
Marina asked the mermaid.
"Hmm, if Kika says so, then there is a high chance that it's true. Whales have good intuition.
"I wasn't sure myself, but I was also drawn to the surface because I felt mermaid magic coming from above. Of course I thought at first, "Cecilia, you are crazy and probably didn't have enough sleep to think this nonsense." I mean, how can mermaid magic come from outside of the sea? That's impossible, right?" Cecilia replied.
"But here we are." She added.
"Is it possible to meet the queen and ask her about the bracelet?"
"Ooof, hmmm, I'm not sure about that. I can get you to Corallium, the mermaid kingdom, but I'm just a regular citizen; I can't really get you an audience with her majesty. But I can try."
"Ohh, I see. Well, that's more than enough. Thank you." Marina smiled.
"Alright, then let's go. I should be back home soon either way. I stayed late today on my cleaning duty, and if I don't return on time to report the area I cleaned today, I won't get my payment. Let's gooo." Cecilia started swimming fast.
"Wait! I came here with my friends. I must tell them first."
"Ohh, where are they?"
"Up there, in the boat." Marina pointed with her finger.
She swam back to the surface.
"Marina! You are okay! Oh, we were so worried." Camellia spoke out loud.
"Yeah, we all started freaking out when the signal disappeared." Finn added.
"All I heard was 'whale, there is a whale.'" Tyson commented.
"Yup, there really was one," Marina replied.
"There was a whale right below us?!" Camellia looked slightly scared.
"Cool." Finn, not so much.
"It left, though, but that's not important now. Listen to this: I found a mermaid! And she agreed to take us to the mermaid kingdom." Just as Marina said those words, Cecilia came to the surface herself.
"Oh, so these are your friends. Hi!" She waved at them with a smile on her face.
"Everyone, this is Cecilia." Marina introduced the mermaid to her friends.
"Umm, Marina, can you translate what this mermaid is saying?" Camellia asked.
"Ohh right, you can't understand her." Marina noticed all of their confused faces.
"I can't really understand them either. Was that fairy language or a human one? I can't really say. I never heard either of them." Cecilia said.
"Camellia, can't you do the language spell again to learn mermaid language?" Marina remembered how the fairy used her magic before to transfer the language knowledge.
"Unfortunately I can't. This is a different case. I barely know any words in Corallium. You see, my spell only works if, prior to casting it, I know on what information I am focusing. I have to possess that knowledge in order to search for it in another's mind. That's why I was able to transfer the knowledge of the Fragmenian language from Finn to you. I can speak Fragmentian too, so I knew on what to focus. In other words, I can't search for something if I don't know what it is." Camellia tried to explain.
"Ahh, I think I get it." Marina replied.
"That's also why I couldn't learn the Plamenian language just like that. I don't know any words in it." Camellia added.
"Um, I don't really like the idea of someone going through my mind. So no thanks." Tyson commented.
"And I prefer learning a language the old school way, by simply reading, writing, and speaking. You know the normal way."
"Oh, I do too. That spell is exhausting too. I just do it when I'm in a hurry, like it was with Marina's case." Camellia said.
"Yeah, my mom didn't exactly give us a luxury to help Marina learn a language properly." Finn commented.
Camellia and Marina chuckled at that.
"Pssst, Marina, what are they saying?" Cecilia whispered to Marina.
"Ohh, they're just talking about the languages. Unfortunately, I don't think you all will be able to understand each other unless there is some mermaid magic that can do that."
"Hmm, I can't do it, but maybe the queen can." Cecilia replied.
"Well, in any case, let's go." She said.
"Wait. What about my friends?"
"They can come too."
"But, umm, they can't breathe underwater."
"Ohhh... Right, that makes sense, sorry. One second, please.
Cecilia pulled a small bottle from a sack that was tied around her waist.
"Here, take this. It's a pear fizzy drink. Us mermaids usually use it for sore throats, but it has other properties too, such as giving beings from the surface the ability to breathe underwater, or so I've heard."
"You heard?" Marina looked worried.
"Yes, from class. Not like there was an opportunity to test it in the present." Mermaid explained.
"Okay, so Cecilia said that if you drink this, you'll be able to breathe underwater just like me." Marina translated to them.
"Is there any chance that I can stay up here?" Tyson asked.
"There needs to be someone to keep an eye on the boat, right?" He sounded nervous.
"I thought you were brave and strong." Camellia teased Tyson.
"Do you not know how to swim?" Finn asked.
"That's not the problem. I know how to swim. It's just that I won't be able to use my ability at all if I get wet, and whenever I stay for too long in the water, I start to get weak. We Plamenians are the opposites of mermaids. Just as they can't stay for too long on the surface, we can't stay down there for too long either. " Tyson explained.
"Oh, I see. I didn't know that part. Sorry." Camellia said.
"It's okay."
But then I don't get it: why were the Plamenians last to evacuate fifty years ago if being on the sea makes them weak? I know it was because of their pride, but still... at what price?
Camellia was lost in her thoughts, thinking about the history.
"It's okay; you can stay then." She said.
Tyson stood quiet for a moment before saying,
"You know what? I'm going after all."
"Are you sure? But you just said—
"I know, and it's true, but it's not that serious. Besides, it'd be kind of lame of me to stay after everything I said before and after you were so nice to accept me in your group. What's the point of adventure if you don't risk it a bit?" Tyson said with a smile on his face.
"Okay, if you say so, but as soon as you start to feel weak, you have to tell us right away!" Camellia was serious.
"You have to promise her, or you're staying on that boat, buddy. Camellia is not messing around. Finn giggled.
"Okay, I promise." Tyson replied.
"Alright, in that case let's go!" Fairy said out loud.
They all drank from the bottle.
"Oh also, here take this." Camellia gave a bag to Tyson.
"It's the swim pants. I made them after you said you would join us." "Fairy,"here, said the fiery boy.
"Oh, thank you," he replied.
A few minutes later they all changed into their swimsuits and swim trunks, respectively. However, Tyson still had his jacket on.
"Aren't you going to take it off? It'll be easier to swim that way." Camellia commented.
"It's better like that." It was clear from the way he said it and the look on his face that Tyson was hiding something.
"Okay, the jacket stays." Fairy didn't want to pry.
"Let's go!" Finn spoke with excitement in his voice.
The five of them dived into the sea.
