Chapter 2:
Misfits of the Magic World
Yurika smirked as she noticed a thinly veiled barrier of sorts coming up fast. "It really is an insult to who all those women once were that they'd put the priestess induction salon so close to the school's boundary barrier. But I guess the ones controlling them don't want them in their paradise," she thought as she crossed through seamlessly.
As she slowed down her flight speed, Yurika glanced back to notice a crowd of priestesses standing at the barrier's border. Due to regulations, not only could the priestess order not enter without special permission, but if they could, they'd be unable to take custody of Yurika. This was due to the fact that the area Yurika had escaped to fell within the jurisdiction of Japan's esteemed Tokyo International University of Magic and Phenomenon, TIUMP.
Thanks to it's eccentric, but influential headmaster, TIUMP had risen rapidly to become the forefront of magical research to the point where the Japanese government decided to grant it jurisdiction over it's own ward as a sign of national pride. Nearly all within and outside Japan aspired to graduate from it, which was made all the more possible thanks to it's high acceptance rate and lack of discrimination against class or mana level. This didn't mean discrimination wasn't present within it's halls though.
"This really is it, huh. Now I got no choice but to graduate at the top so I get an automatic seat on the alumni board, ensuring sanctity of wealth and well being. Wish that stupid hag had faith in me, but I guess all the drugs rotted that away... I really don't give a damn if the priestesses retaliate against her, or Yuze. They're both too far gone," Yurika thought as a large clocktower and campus came into view.
Rather than speed straight into the main campus, Yurika first decided to land and whip out her makeup kit in order to touch up her look a bit. Though she didn't mind the feeling of no longer having eyelashes, she felt slapping some fake ones on amplified her bald look. Reapplying her lip gloss and blue eyeshadow, Yurika smiled at herself in the mirror before stroking her smooth head.
"So smooth... I know it won't grow back, but I wanna just try shaving it proper once... or twice."
Since there was still some time before the induction ceremony, Yurika headed for a nearby mall and navigated her way to it's cosmetics department.
"Razors, shaving cream, can't forget beauty cream. Oh, they got wax too. Hmm, a little pricey, but I think I can make it up with a commission."
Setting the goods in a basket, she made her way to a special counter at the checkout labeled, "Commission's Corner." There a mustachioed man eyed her up.
"Boobs? You're a girl, baldy?"
"Oh? Never seen a bald girl before in your life?" Yurika chuckled.
"Of course I've seen them. They wear the robes, got no mouth, creepy as hell. If you're coming to me, I'm guessing you're so poor you need to try making something to pay for your goods, right?"
"Correct. You accept glass works, yes?"
"Not this department, but over yonder, yeah we do. Oh, that doesn't mean you need to mosy on over to the specific one, these counters are universal store-wide."
Yurika smirked and extended her hand, slowly forming a small glass crane table ornament. The man put on a pair of gloves and carefully examined the ornament before setting it down on a scale of sorts. A green light akin to that of a copier then emitted from the scale and scanned the ornament.
"No cracks, sturdy, aesthetically pleasing... This will fetch you a price of 5,000 yen, I'd say," the man grumbled.
"That much? Then how about I make-"
"First, let me scan those items you want to buy."
Yurika's expression soured a bit as she complied with the request.
"Your price adds up to 3,437 yen. With the commission's counter, we round that up to the nearest zero, meaning the price rounds out to 3,500 even. That means you get 1,500 back."
"So can-"
"No, rules state you can only make enough to cover the cost of the purchase. If the price is more, we do give you the surplus, but due to international law, you can only use our services once a day, though that only applies to the stores under our jurisdiction. Just for policy's sake, we are to show you all that fall under our jurisdiction and inform you that upon agreeing to this transaction, your identification data will be saved and used to prevent you from using our services until the next business day. You will still be allowed to enter our shops, but will need to declare your on-hand budget to the golem guards. Now, do you wish to proceed with the transaction?"
"Any excaptions to being allowed to use your services again?"
"Yes, simply prove your noble lineage and you may use our fine services without restraint," the man snickered.
"Is that the only one?"
A scowl formed on the man's face. "Due to a, draconian decree from this special world's authority, TIUMP, enrolled students may obtain a license should they not have noble lineage. There are three tiers, basic, which allows you to use our services just to cover the cost of purchases, artisan, which allows up to three times a day plus all the benefits of basic, and... esteemed..."
A smirk began to form on Yurika's face as she watched the man squirm. "And, what is this "esteemed" class?"
"The same... The same rights as nobility... BUT! But... this class is rare, only given to the highest honors students, which more than often are nobility anyway. I doubt a poor hairless whore like you would ever get such an honor, MAYBE artisan, but never esteemed."
"Wanna bet that ugly stache and toupee on it?"
"Common- Aspiring patron, we do have a harsh harassment policy against those that harass our esteemed staff here."
"Alright, I'll take the deal and leave."
After paying without issue, Yurika grabbed a quick snack at the food court before leaving and resuming her journey to the campus. "Those ivory tower snobs. They just can't tolerate someone without their special blood making a decent living. I swear, when I become the next grand magistrate, all those classist nobles are going to hell," she angrily thought.
