Chapter 8:
Two in the Abandoned House
Misaki was in a daze in her room.
A desolate space with only the bare minimum of furniture. Half-empty bottles of alcohol lay scattered across the floor.
And then—she realized it.
—At the end of the month, her rental contract would end.
She had intended to take her own life.
She had quit her job, reduced her belongings, and had been preparing to bring everything to an end.
That was why—even the contract for her home—she had decided not to renew.
But she hadn’t been able to die.
In that abandoned house, she had been stopped.
And before she knew it, she was still alive.
She had found herself thinking—that she wanted to live.
But in reality, nothing has changed.
No job. No income. No guarantor.
Even if she wanted to rent, she couldn’t.
For now, she was still afraid to rely on others.
Kindness was too straightforward—it only made things harder instead.
...And yet, those two were a little different.
They didn’t push their words on her—they simply stayed there.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t been afraid.
There had been something unknowable in that abandoned house.
Things she probably wasn’t supposed to see had been there, too.
Just remembering it sent a chill down her spine.
And yet—
that place alone had never turned her away.
“…Guess there’s nowhere left but there.”
She was still a little scared, honestly.
And even so—
maybe it was all right to be afraid.
A place where the me who had kept on living could still go.
For now, that was the only place.
