Chapter 1:

Recalling my memory

An Ideal World

"Why are there more windmills?"

I have been walking for hours and the rows of windmills just won't stop. Because I woke up at the plain grass field, there wasn't anyone for me to ask what happened. The most logical thing to do is to walk until I find someone.

During that time, I have recalled most of my memory. My name is Norm and is a 24-year-old adult. I am a scientist of innovations or that is what I call myself. In reality, I'm a freelancer whose outcomes depend on the final products. I invent gadgets and electronics to help one's daily life. My inventions are usually lackluster, to say the least. They are simple but other than that, it isn't noteworthy. For instance. I created a spoon that can be substituted and become a fork.

"With inventions like that, of course, no one would buy"

I said it with sadness but firmly. Indeed, my inventions can never compare those with others. Despite that, I still invent them because that is who I have chosen to be. I want to help people that are in need in every way possible. While some chose to be the master in one field, I undertook every field. While I cannot say I'm great but I'm average across every subject. I have the basic knowledge of every subject in schools such as math, physic, chemistry, and even obscure ones like astronomy. That is why I was able to identify the shapes of the stars.

But why am I here? The last thing I remember is a project that I have done to sell to a company. It is a pod that can reduce human energy consumption when asleep. It has sleeping gas on it to help humans quickly fall asleep. Its purpose is to be a door for the upcoming future of Virtual Reality. With VR, humans can work in an environment that requires no physical movement. It is perfect for jobs like programming when there isn't any need for human labor in the real world.

Yes, as I was trying to demonstrate the product to the company, they rejected my idea, saying it wouldn't work. At the last-ditch effort, I put myself inside the pod and tried to demonstrate. Suddenly, a massive earthquake hit the building and everyone quickly ran away, leaving me alone. I was about to leave too but then the sleeping gas button was accidentally pressed by one of the men.

That seems to be the last thing that I remember before being here, stuck in the middle of nowhere with nothing but windmills. I think I should have died back then but is somehow still alive. Should I be grateful?

"Why should I? My life has been miserable since day one"

From my birth to the current days, society has always been harsh. The sky was always black, my home existed no trees, only facilities upon facilities. It has been completely modernized to the point where there might not be any way back.

But as I keep walking, the air is so fresh that it feels like humans have never even existed here before. This terrifies me as I might die of starvation. The windmills don't help ease the feeling much as I still haven't found anyone.

Somehow, this should be the best outcome. The absence of humans means no more pollution and Earth might restore. Maybe I'm the one who shouldn't be here.

As for now, I might walk until my legs feel like a pair of chopsticks. There isn't for me to do...

"Is that light?"
