Chapter 2:
Beneath the White Shadow
"Otto san! Why you in the hospital?! What happened?!”
His daughter asked through the video call as he sat on a chair, in front of the Operation Room.
"Wanna know what happen? There was a scary guy pointing his gun at me! I dodged the bullet, huuishh! I told him Im not here to hurt him but he bang bang bang! We had an epic battle, like anime style fight, pichuu pichuu! He’s down! K.O! Wasted!”
"Hoo! To-san so cool! What happened next? Are you hurt?! Want me to finish him?!”
His daughter was ready to throw hands but he just laughed it off.
"Negative, ma’am! Im a strong policeman! No bullet can graze me! Ah anyway Luna, where’s okka san?”
"Okka san went to pick up Uki! We wanna play GTA IV today! Ah to-san, you will be home for dinner, right? Right?”
He smiles and nodded.
"Yeah! I will make it this time! Promise!”
"You better do! Its been 731 times now!”
"You counted it?!”
She looked elsewhere before turning back to the phone.
"Ohh they home! Thank you for your service, officer!”
She saluted him before hanging up, right before he could reply.
"Wai-… At least lemme speak to your mother first!”
He lowered his head and sighed deeply.
"731… Im such a bad father…”
After a while, someone bumped his forehead with a coffee cup.
"Huh?”
"You forgot your caffeine, dumbass!”
He flinched, seeing Amri in front of him.
"How did you know Im here?!”
"What ya expect from a ‘midman’? Anyway, Im gonna charge you extra for delivery!”
He handed him the coffee.
"Thank-… Wait, aint your roadta-”
"Nevermind, its on the house!”
Amri grinned and sat down while Kitai sipped his coffee, smiling.
"Hmmp! You finally remember to put sugar?!”
Amri crossed his arm and looked away.
"Your job is full of bitterness anyway…”
"Oh wow that’s sweet of you!”
He sipped the coffee again and noticed Amri staring at the OR door.
"I hope he’ll be fine… He still young… His arms scratched here and ther-”
"Drug addict…”
"Heh?”
Kitai blinked as Amri closed his eyes and explain it briefly.
"He took drugs, started hallucinating and scratched himself! He craved more, had no money, robbed in broad daylight, got busted! Case close!”
"No sheet sherlock! Joke aside, you cant blindly make a conclusion like that!”
A female surgeon exited the room and they quickly stood up.
"How is he, doct?”
Kitai asked with restless voice.
"He’s still unconsicious but stable… We’ll monitor him closely in the ICU!”
Amri smiled slightly and Kitai wiped his face with both hands.
"Thank you so much, doct! I’ll get back to the station, fill some paperwork and return here!”
"No problem, officer! We’ll take good care of him!”
Amri tapped Kitai’s shoulder as they walked away.
"Aa- officer!”
She said and they turned around.
"Thank you for your service, officer!”
Kitai’s heart skipped a beat. He went speechless but Amri interrupted the moment.
"He’s married! Im still single!”
She chuckles and they grinned before leaving.
"Need a ride? You can pay your fine at the station…”
"No, f*ck you! Know what? Maybe I should… so I can report you for stealing my plate!”
"No wonder you still single…”
Back at the station, he parked the patrol car in the garage and the front clerk greets him.
"Ishina? What you doing here?”
"Break but Im on a diet! I heard bout the case, is he doing fine?”
He took a deep breath and opened the trunk.
"ICU… Might take some time for him to fully recover…”
"I see… Sorry to hear that…”
He grabbed the lockbox containing the gun the suspect used to rob the mart.
"Anyway, you single right, Ishina?”
She froze for a moment as he closed the trunk. Her cheeks turned red as she touching her hair, glanced around.
"Ar- are you… hit- hitting on me? Arent you married?!”
"Wha- no no no! I mean yeah! I mean-…”
He cleared his throat.
"Ju- Just asking… For a friend!”
"Ahh! Is he rich?”
She raised an eyebrow as they walked into the station.
Somewhere in the dark, the previous pickup truck driver and the shooter were beaten harshly by several thugs with dragon tattoo.
"Awwuuuu!”
A man wearing a wolf-shaped silver pendant growled and they stepped back.
"Haishh… Stupid idiot GARBAGE!!!”
He kicked the table and it toppled onto both of them.
"Should I shoot or should I shoo?”
He knelt, pressed his handgun against the shooter’s head, who gasped heavily, bleeding all over, struggle to respond.
"He-… egh…”
"You lucky Im a human, not a demon, not a monster!”
He stood up and turned around.
"You, you and you! Silent that boy or I silent you three! You! Find my daughter but don’t hurt her!”
"Awwwuuuuuu!!!”
He held the gun sideways, fired the shooter from behind without looking then walked away.
"Time to hunt! Awwwuuuuuu!!!”
Later that evening, Amri was busy cleaning his store for closing when suddenly a male teenage customer approached him.
"Mister! Still open? Im craving for a tortilla!”
Amri shook his head while holding the broom.
"Sorry, don’t have enough ingredients yet…”
"Sad… When you think I could get some?”
"Maybe… three to four days…”
Amri blinked three times, swiped the floor seven times then blink again while talking.
"...got a problem with the delivery at the moment…”
"Aight, I will come back soon! Thank you!”
Later that night, Amri headed to the outdoor cafeteria right next to the hospital building and crossed over Kitai, who was still in his uniform, sitting with a donut in hand.
"Why you here?”
Amri asked with a straight face. Kitai who was about to bite his perfectly round donut, stopped suddenly.
"Huh? That’s my line!”
He lowered his donut as Amri sat beside him, scrolling his phone.
"Its 8:30 PM right now, your shift already over, officer!”
"Waiting for the night shift unit… Well Im late to work today anyway so I don’t really mind waiting a bit…”
"Late? That’s rare for yo-… No signal?”
At the same time, someone passing by, talking on the phone and suddenly got cut off.
"Hello? Hello?”
"No line?”
"You also?”
Everyone around frowned in frustration. Kitai, who was about to bite his donut, suddenly heard gunfire inside the building.
"Wha-”
Everyone panicked and ran away. Kitai left his donut behind and grabbed both his gun and radio as he sprinted.
"5 Sam-”
He stopped as the radio produced loud crackling noises. The intruder guarding the door heard it and fired at the wall.
"Tsk! What’s happenin-”
"Jammer!”
Amri said as they hid behind a wall.
"What you doing here?!”
Kitai shouted at Amri, but the intruder misunderstood and stopped firing.
"We come for the boy!”
"Not you!”
"Huh?”
The intruder tilted his head. Kitai holstered his radio and signaled Amri to leave.
"They firing SMG and you here with a Glock?! You got a death wish, ‘Rambo’?!”
"That’s what I get paid for! Why you even here in the first place?!”
The intruder lowered his gun and interrupted.
"I dont know who that is but he got a point, officer!”
"Shut the f*ck up, no one talking to you!”
Amri snapped at the intruder then continued.
"You outnumbered and outgunned! Gimme your girl!”
Kitai and the intruder froze.
"Wha-… She’s 12!”
"Not her, dumbass! Your 19 girl!”
The intruder flinched.
"Why he asking for his daughter at a time like this?!”
Kitai knelt, took his backup gun strapped under his pants leg and handed it to Amri.
"You better keep her safe! She’s precious!”
"Depends!”
"He gave him his daughter?! JUST LIKE THAT?!”
Amri cocked the handgun and they prepared for the battle.

Extra 02:
Earlier this morning, Kitai, wearing casual, was on his way to the police station, riding Light Rail Transit in the front coach when suddenly the train stopped in the middle of its ride.
"Dear passengers, we apologize for the sudden stop due to emergency maintenance up ahead! Please be patience while we fix the issue…”
Everyone muttered under their breath. Kitai picked up his phone and dialed his superior, Lieutenant Ryoga.
"Morning sir! Its me, Officer Kitai! Im stuck in the LRT and uhh… I think its gonna take a while…”
"Make it quick!”
His superior hung up the call.
"What he meant by that?!”
Ryoga on the other hand, sighed heavily and shook his head as he was also stucked in the same transit at the very back coach.
"I cant believe thi-”
His phone vibrated harder than usual as a Morse code message sent by National Security Protocol popped up on the screen.
