Chapter 2:

The First Day (Part 2)

Kanojo wa Koe dake - A Love Beyond the Screen

Today was the first day of the new school year and Ren Sato—17 years old and an introverted person—with his one and only best friend Haruto Kanda were sitting in the big gymnasium hall, on school typical plastic chairs, to wait until the welcome ceremony is finally over—as in Ren's case—or still patiently hearing and applauding what has been said, like Haruto did.
After one hour of welcome ceremony, the students of the second year were finally released into their classrooms again to begin with some more organizational things.
In the morning, Ren and Haruto sat together during the attendance check and greeting round and now it was ten o'clock and they both sat on the same seats again. It was time to decide who the next class president will be. You could be suggested or suggest yourself for the election and so it happened that Ren—suggested by Haruto to tease and help him to cope with new situations—and former class president of the class 1-C from last year—Airi Fujimoto, which suggested herself—were the only two up for election. Because a vice president was needed and there were only two candidates up for election, the election was only to decide who the class president and who the vice president will be. The pressure of letting the teacher down and the fact that Ren knew Haruto would be supporting him if needed, was enough to accept his fate and so the election began.
And Ren was lucky. The winner was Airi with over eighty percent of the votes. At least Ren didn't have to do the most work as vice president so he was happy the election turned out like this. But suddenly, there was a new problem for him. He has to work with another student than his best friend Haruto and on top of that in a high-ranking position like class president and vice president. But that was not enough. Airi Fujimoto was someone everyone liked and she was relatively famous back in the class of the first year. She was a real beauty and of course she had top grades as well and so she was the polar opposite of Ren. His grades were only in the average position or even worse sometimes and he never really stood out in class. He thought he wasn't that good looking but actually, he looks pretty good if it wasn't for his uncommunicative charisma.
As Ren realized the problem he said to Haruto: "Dammit, you always have to put me in tight spots!" Haruto only smiled back and looked at Ren as if he had nothing to do with it.
"I'm glad you like your new position as vice class president."
"I never wanted to be for election anyways"
"And why didn't you say no? Mister Tanaka asked you if you want or not and you said yes. Come on, I'll help you if it is too much for you, haha"
Ren was sulking but Haruto didn't care.
Next on the to-do-list was picking a club activity. Though you don't really need to be in a club, it was seen positive if you enrolled in one.
"What club do you want to enroll in Ren?"
"I don't think I'll enroll anywhere."
"So the usual for you then, I see. I don't think I will enroll yet. First I want to see what the basketball club does before I enroll. Maybe I'll help them out a little or something like that."
"Oh, so you're interested in basketball now?" asked Ren.
"Yep, don't you think it fits me? I mean I'm taller than you so that should work."
"Hey! Don't talk to me like I'm a midget! You're 1,75 meters tall and thus only one centimeter taller than me."
"It's so funny to tease you, I'm sorry"
It was time to hand the sheets of paper back to the teacher Mister Tanaka and since Airi as the new class president handed them all out, Ren had to hand them all back to Mister Tanaka. After the organizational stuff was finally finished, another hour was gone and the club activities started. The bell rang and all the students went to their clubs they chose and others, like Ren, were about to go home but Airi Fujimoto had some other plans for him. Ren was in front of the classroom door, when Airi said: "Hey Sato-san, right? Can we talk a little before you go to your club?"
"Erm, umm, well, I don't have any club activities so I'm free." stammered Ren.
"Oh, so you don't care what they think about you?" Airi was baffled
"Ermm, no, I don't care what anyone thinks about me. Why should I?" Ren was at least as baffled then Airi was. Was Airi probably someone who doesn't liked being in the spotlight? But these are only assumptions and Ren withdrew them as quick as they came up in his head. "She is popular and who doesn't like it being popular? Oh, wait. I don't like it." Rens thoughts went on, but Airi interrupted.
"I thought we get to know each other a bit because we're class representatives."
The next shock for Ren. What did she mean by "get to know each other"?!
"So I'm Fujimoto Airi and it's nice to meet you. I like drawing so I enrolled at the art club. That also means we don't have too much time to talk."
Ah, that was it what she meant. Ren was somehow dissapointed.
"Um, hi. It's also a pleasure to meet you Fujimoto-san. I'm Sato Ren and I like playing video games and watching live streams and stuff." said Ren ashamed that his hobbies weren't so interesting like Airis. But after he said that, Ren thought he could see something in her large, beautiful amber eyes.
"You love watching live streams?!" asked Airi excitedly. Ren was shaken from that reaction. He didn't think someone like Airi, a model student, would react in such a way to such a lame hobby.
"Oh, erm, never mind! Forget what I said! You didn't hear anything! Bye, and I'm looking forward to good cooperation!" said Airi—as if she were a different person—and ran off into the wrong direction. "The art club was in the direct opposite direction" thought Ren, still trying to understand what just had happened.
Then came Haruto and tapped Ren on his left shoulder.
"Everything okay? Did you do something to her?" asked Haruto.
"Huh? Oh, Haru, I didn't notice you were standing right behind us. But wait, if you had done so, then why are you asking? I did nothing. I think she was excited that I watch live streams but then she changed her mind and ran off. And on top of that into the wrong direction."
"Hrmm, if you say so I have to believe it, don't I? Hehe." said Haruto with a smug face.
"I don't know what you want from me but let's go home now. I wanted to watch a new anime that dropped yesterday."
"Okay, if you like to go. Because I didn't enroll yet in any club activities I'm free to go anyway." said Haruto before they both went home. When they arrived at the same spot where they had met in the morning, it was already eleven thirty. Saying "See you tomorrow!", they went their seperate ways home.
